He reportedly died of a stroke. šŸ™ Sad to hear. Aaron (via RBF) and Dan commented on it, but no one else connected to the band has seemed to. Tyler’s been brought up several times on Scott’s discord server which Tavis is also in, and neither of them have ever commented when he has come up.

I appreciate the sentiment, I just wish there was a better song around it.

So he’s really out. Maybe they weren’t sure at one point? Doesn’t seem like it was on super good terms if it was so abrupt and they were hush hush about it.

It starts off strong enough! And both instrumentals are good. Carol of the Beers is an interesting idea but the sound effects ruined it. The only song I can say I really disliked was Whatever U Celebrate.

I think it’s just a thing someone made up that has started to gain ground.

How much is it selling for on iTunes? Is it only on iTunes or other digital retailers?

They did the “hey we’ll play at your school as long as you pay us!” thing a few years ago too. It’s tough especially now because they’re an independent band and they’re not putting out products at the rate they used to (they had Monkeys for Nothin, then the cover album, the live DVD, the best of, and finally the new album, but nothing since then for two years). The venue size to see RBF has steadily gotten smaller over the years as well.

And if Ryland really is out, I bet it has something to do with him playing gigs with this band America. It seems like he sprung it on them at the last second, considering they said Ed “saved the day” by playing on this last tour.

Johnny commented asking him not to pee on the bus floor, so I guess he’s still in. That talk of him being the “old drummer” and Ed being the “official” new drummer may have meant there was some back and forth on kicking him out.

So Aaron and Johnny are the most longstanding members now.

      This band is freakin old…

Are we finally going to get a non-potato version of The Set Up video?

      FOUR live shows?

It’s not sarcasm. He had a great opening set and the crowd was very welcoming (which he seemed not to expect, but a lot of people were there because they were excited to see him!) Scott’s set was: Welcome to New York, Hands Out Holds Down, The Hilarious, Stayed Away too Long, a new song (which I forgot the name of, but which I’ll call Teach Me to Smile), and Drunk Again.

He sang the whole encore with Reel Big Fish: Trendy, I Want Your Girlfriend, an impromptu performance of Join the Club (Aaron said Billy had never played the song live, and Scott said he was surprised he could remember it), and Take On Me.

They ate the crowd up. Aaron gave a very sincere “We’ve really had a good time here tonight, you guys have been awesome” at the end, and Scott was taken aback by the whole crowd singing the Drunk Again chorus, actually throwing out a “sing it!” the second time around. He seemed really humbled by how much the crowd loved him.

I’m going to see Reel Big Fish in Brooklyn on Monday night, I’ll post here if they play any FOE covers. Based on recent setlists, they’ve been playing My Life, Angry Anthem, and Fight.

I’m very happy to say I’m going to the show on Monday. I’ll try to take some videos of Scott on my phone. If the sound’s good, I’ll even try to get whichever song(s?) he sings with Reel Big Fish.

Just checked on that interview. “With Appleton’s lack of interest for being a front man and the subsequent elimination of ego concerns, the horns are left to play as a true horn section for the first time.” Good to know the band’s real concerns with Scott are finally coming out.

I remember on the commentary for the live DVD, they were talking about how So Much For Rock and Roll was written for We’re Not Happy… in its preliminary stages when they were working with an unnamed producer, and it was a five-minute disco jam.

The evolution of a Reel Big Fish song is probably a very interesting process.
