Ryland quit?

The band did this last tour with Ed Larsen on drums, who apparently “saved the day”, Ryland’s been spotted playing drums with the band America, and Johnny referred to him as “our old drummer” in a recent beer rating article for VultureHound. Is it fair to say the Rabbit is out? Does anyone know what happened?

A few days before the tour started a friend of the drummer posted “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the new drummer for reel big fish. ed larsen…its official..” I thought he was mistaken, but it did seem odd that Ryland backed out of the tour at the last second.

Anyways, Ryland lasted longer than any other drummer. Ryland’s music is really good imo. I hope he does well on his own. I hope this new drummer brings a fresh approach. I’ve always enjoyed Andrew’s drumming the most but the ever changing drum position has been interesting and I hope it continues.

Lack of attention brought to his alleged departure makes me think that, were it true, it isn’t on good terms.
He wasn’t my favourite. He was a cool dude and good, I just preferred his style least of the RBF drummers (yes, including Justin what’sit).

Actually the drumming on We’re Not Happy… is probably my favourite.

So Aaron and Johnny are the most longstanding members now.

      This band is freakin old…

Johnny commented asking him not to pee on the bus floor, so I guess he’s still in. That talk of him being the “old drummer” and Ed being the “official” new drummer may have meant there was some back and forth on kicking him out.

Or maybe they were playing sarcastic. We’ll see.

Partially unrelated: have you seen the new “will-play-any-show-for-money” post on the band’s facebook today? We always knew that you don’t get rich by playing ska (not anymore anyway), but this thing is making me think that the band’s going broke. And this may push some members to try and find some better gigs.
That been said, Ryland has always been showing the highest commitment to the band (always appearing in interviews, being nice to fans, playing while ill…) so if he’s quitting I beilieve it’s because he really has to. Or because Aaron fired him.

They did the “hey we’ll play at your school as long as you pay us!” thing a few years ago too. It’s tough especially now because they’re an independent band and they’re not putting out products at the rate they used to (they had Monkeys for Nothin, then the cover album, the live DVD, the best of, and finally the new album, but nothing since then for two years). The venue size to see RBF has steadily gotten smaller over the years as well.

And if Ryland really is out, I bet it has something to do with him playing gigs with this band America. It seems like he sprung it on them at the last second, considering they said Ed “saved the day” by playing on this last tour.

The post about playing shows is probably related to the contracts they sign with concert promoters. For example: When a famous band plays a show they are (most the time) contractually prohibited from playing with a certain amount of miles of the venue (usually 50 miles in the midwest) within 30 (or even up to 90) days. The way around this is to find venues outside of those areas, or play private shows – as they do not encroach on the promoters profits. Most colleges fall beyond the distance, and some are students-only, thus private.

It’s much cheaper to do this, than tour Europe while waiting for the contract term to expire.

As for Ryland, it could have been two mistakes that happened relatively close, if it was anything else we’ll never know because nobody on this board has any real connection to the band, like some old members used to. Honestly, Ryland probably makes more money on the other tours anyways.

Wow, they talked about a Christmas album a few months ago, and numerous times over the past two decades, but it’s finally happening.

So he’s really out. Maybe they weren’t sure at one point? Doesn’t seem like it was on super good terms if it was so abrupt and they were hush hush about it.

I’d say Ryland’s gig with the band America is what came up ahead of the tour. If that became permanent, it probably pays well enough that he’d do it full-time.

So is Ed the official drummer now? On rbf’s streamed concert yesterday [yahoo screens] Aaron introduced Ed as the drummer of the Suburban Legends, rather than “former” drummer of SL. I really like Ed’s style, a bit looser than ryland’s. I think he’s a great choice, hopefully he is in the band.
