MemberSince we already have the songwriting thing in discussion in the other thread, what else would you like to see on this album?
Personally, I'd like:
– No covers
– More songs like Cannibal, Slow Down, and Bang! The Mouse Explodes
– No more than 12 tracks
– GOOD cover art, for cryin out loud
– No remakes of any older song
– As mentioned above, NO bonus tracks UNLESS they're remakes. I want the band to focus on a core number of songs to make an album with. If they NEED them, then have some remakes.
– Let Scott write a single songYeah, the last one is never going to happen, but thought I'd try. :p

The WindMemberI'd like them to finish off the songs they need to remake. Eventually.

[/quote1234407477]As much as I like Slow Down and Bang the Mouse, I wouldn't want to hear them write new songs.
I've been trying to make another play list like I did for Monkeys, but with the best songs from all the RBF albums. What I've found is that songs from Cheer Up! and WDTRSH don't really fit with any other songs. The performance and production of those albums is far beyond any others they have recorded. Having to listen to songs back to back from all the different albums really makes the differences obvious.
After talking about this for the past few weeks, and lots of contemplating, I have come to new conclusions.
Once I heard Cheer Up! with the new track listing, my opinion of it as a whole changed completely. Cheer Up! is the perfect progression from WDTRSH except for it's obvious flaws. Cannibal, is the only song that has continued to push the band in the next direction, but it's not as amazing as we all think it is, and compared to What Are Friends For, it doesn't come close.
Suckers, What Are Friends For, A Little Doubt, Average Man, and Drunk Again, are probably the best songs ever written by RBF, and they came out of the album with the most drama.
What is it that really makes these songs so special? As a whole, all of these songs have layers upon layers of overdubs.
What are friends for, starts out with syncopation, and continues through the verse. It's not a standard ska sound, but still has the ska feel. Scott has great background vocals that blend perfectly with everything else that is going on in the song. Of course, Carlos was a great drummer, and had more of a funky grooving feel than any of the other RBF drummers.
The transition to the chorus is simple, but very effective melodically. The chorus strays away from the syncopation between all the instruments and sticks to a more consistent beat. The outro from the chorus leads back into the verse perfectly.
The guitar tone for this song is probably the best of any song they have recorded, the juicy solo sounds like something Chicago would write, in fact, this whole song has a very chicago type feel.
That's it!!! RBF need to try and incorporate some Chicago into their song writing. They should cover 25 or 6 to 4. I've been waiting years to hear a good ska band cover that song, but Scott would have to sing it.

MemberSo I went through my Chicago collection, and What Are Friends For is totally RBF headed in the direction of Chicago. If they could hone their style in this direction, I think they would be very pleased with what they write.
Here are some songs for those of you that don't listen to Chicago.
Make Me Smile [link=hyperlink url]http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TE56KPKC[/link]
Questions 67 & 68 [link=hyperlink url]http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GV7T6SKH[/link]
My favorite 25 or 6 to 4 [link=hyperlink url]http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EQCEPGI2[/link]
And the last one is called Listen [link=hyperlink url]http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NKAGZ11R[/link]
Mix a little Chicago, with some Oingo Boingo, add the RBF style, and we'd have a great album. I know they could write it, and it would be amazing!

MemberHahaha, I love how you came to that conclusion! 😀
Obviously, I don't want them to write songs JUST LIKE Cannibal, Slow Down, or Bang. I want them to reach a little further like they did with those songs.
My favorite part of Monkeys was the sheer irony of the soundclip asking for non-ska songs next to the MOST GENERIC SKA SONG RBF EVER WROTE and on top of it, it's a song about living your dream. That's probably the best RBF-related joke I've ever heard.
My biggest peeve is that since WNHTYNH, all RBF has played has been ska punk. That album had synth pop, power pop, a ballad, and some great sounding pure ska songs. (For all the problems with the production, Story Of My Life sounds FANTASTIC)
RBF is at their best when they stretch themselves. That's why White Trash and Cheer Up are so great.
RBF is not just a ska-punk band, and they never were.
Less Than Jake and The Suicide Machines have always thrived in the genre, but RBF has never stuck around that genre like they have.

MemberDude, I was so stoked when I thought of putting that "call out research hook" audio clip in there. I was even more stoked when I was able to edit his words to say what I want. Then it goes into live your dream, then him talking again, then into way back with Aarons evil laugh, closing the era of jive and coming out on top.
Did you like how I started the songs on the end of the previous song? Some worked so perfectly, it's amazing! RBF should let us make the track listing for their next album, it would be sick! Doesn't the album have so much more energy with all the songs pushed closer together? Nothing kills the energy of an album like dead air between songs.
Seriously though, they just need to listen to more Chicago, and Oingo Boingo.

MemberDesensitized — nice avatar! I love the Smoking Popes. I'm not too far from them (live in Northern Illinois) and have seen them several times locally. Great band!
Another Chicago land band that doesn't get a lot of due that I think is outstanding is Local H. They're of mid-90s fame with "Bound For The Floor", but have released several solid albums and are much more catchy than your average heavy sound alternative / grunge band.
