AdminKeymasterI was just on the Aquabats website reading the news and I came across this little section.
Anyway, we then boarded a plane and headed straight back to AUSTRALIA!!! WOW!! What a country! Its really amazing… it rained everyday!! AWESOME!! The shows with REEL BIG FISH were SUPER FUN and no bad guys even attacked us… it WAS A MIRACLE!! We were even there for Scott from RBF's last show in PERTH!! We went out on stage and helped sing SCOTT'S A DORK!! PERFECT! It was a great tour and thanks to all the radness we received from all our new friends and fans in the land of OZ!
Please tell me Scott is not leaving!

MemberIf the Aquabats aren't joking around, then Reel Big Fish will likely no longer mean anything to me considering their recent output. Scott was the only reason I was sticking around. But this leaves a few questions:
1. Who will replace him?
2. Will he appear on their next album?
3. Will he put out his album now? -

MemberThey haven't responded to anyone asking them on Twitter. If his Twitter is to be believed, Scott has been in Brooklyn since the 13th, but it says nothing about him leaving the band, it's just him thanking Australia for a great tour. The Fish are going to have to clear this up eventually, and the simple fact they haven't just come out and said "Scott hasn't quit the band" is worrisome.

MemberI distinctly remember seeing a tweet from scott recently that said something along the lines of "if something is not growing it is usually dead or dying"… it has since been deleted…
also ere is the seemingly simultaneous disappearance of Aaron's (very popular) FB profile… this could be unrelated entirely, though.

AdminKeymasterIf he does end up leaving it will be interesting to see who they replace him with, Because he is not easily replaceable.
-
December 21, 2010 at 5:47 am #27504
The WindMemberHe's almost as irreplaceable as Aaron. Actually, Scott's a better singer than Aaron, so all he has going for him really is songwriting, and we all know that hasn't been much of an issue in the past 5+ years.
My guess is they won't replace him.
-
December 21, 2010 at 3:39 pm #27505
SamuMemberTo tell the truth, I saw the Fish without Scott when he was ill some years ago. They rocked – of course, it was far far better when I saw them [i]with[/i] him, but if one didn't know that Scott was supposed to be there, he wouldn't feel that something was missing. This effect was probably amplified by the fact tha they didn't do much talk/joke stuff, almost only songs (it was in Italy, so Ryland told me they did it on purpose, fearing people wouldn't understand what they were saying and consequent awkwardness)
BUT.
One thing is not having Scott on stage, for an evening or forr a month. Another is not having Scott in the band, permanently.
Scott is not replaceable. If he goes, the Fish as we know them are gone. Something else will survive, but it will be an entirely different thing.Anyway, it's too soon and until it's confirmed we're just talking about hypoteses.
It's also clear that Scott has been sort of a marginal presence since he moved to NY. No input in new songs, little to no interviews, etc. Whether he willingly stepped aside or he was forced to, is yet another story. -

MemberYeah, I think you guys should no longer be fans. Make a shrine, have a memorial, bury your records, light a candle, make a wish, say a prayer, tweet your anger, complain on Facebook and go about your lives. The Fish will do what they do, with or without you. For every fan that leaves, a few thousand more come along and they get bigger and bigger as the years go by.
Everyone bitched and complained when Matt left too. Everybody swore how they were no longer going to be fans and punish a band that had no say-so in a member deciding to start a family. I've heard RBF with and without Scott, I could hardly tell the difference. The only thing that was missing was the narcissistic jokes. I'm not a hater. Scott does have a wonderful talent, but it's not ending my appreciation for a great ska band, if it's true that he's leaving. I'm sure if he's leaving, it's with good reason, and it's to be a respected decision.

The WindMemberLike you don't already know.
If I didn't actually care, I wouldn't care, but I do care so here I am caring. You know what I think of how these guys go about their business. There are other bands fucking up way more than these fellas, but I'm here because I still like these guys. I'm certainly not here for the community anymore; that just doesn't exist.
To very briefly clarify one more time:
I think Aaron Barrett is a great performer still. As a studio band, they've been nothing but a disappointment for five years. In those five years, there have only been about 12 new songs released, and apparently most of these songs were b-side worthy songs that never got recorded. I'm waiting for real songs to appear so I can make my decision about where they stand in my opinion, but so far they've just been throwing about thirty covers my direction. -
December 22, 2010 at 2:38 pm #27509
SamuMemberLet's be serious now, Aaron IS Reel Big Fish.
And to clarify, I'm not mad or upset about Scott supposedly leaving the band. If and when it happens, it will surely be for a good reason (not that I want to know). It's just a pity. They're my favourite currently-existing band and Scott's undoubtedly part of the reason why.
Maybe we're just getting old. I am and they are. We should get over it.

MemberRBF will be finally dead to me if this is true. Their live performances have been seriously suffering over the last year. I saw them in June and July in 2009 as well as July and August in 2010. The 2009 performances were leagues better than their 2010 performances. The best way to describe the shows I saw in 2010 is comparing it to a band who’s had a hit and is desperately trying to hold onto their past fame and success without doing anything new. This is projected not only in their choice of songs, but also their stage banter and presence. In 2009, Aaron and Scott would exchange all kinds of fun banter and Aaron would move all around the stage. This is not the case with the shows I saw in 2010.
In terms of Scott himself, I met him once in 2009 and again in 2010. In 2009 he acted very youthful and was very excited to meet a fan. When I mentioned how much of a fan of I was of The Littlest Man Band and his solo work he was very excited. In 2010 when I met him he seemed very down.
I think Scott may have just burned out on playing the same old songs with RBF. Every great musician has the urge to create, and while that may have died for Aaron, I don’t think this is the case with Scott. Given his efforts on his solo work, its evident he really wants to make music and play new music, RBF isn’t providing that.
RBF is dead to me without Scott. When we lost Tavis, or nameless drummers, or even Matt Wong, we could recover because the sound of their instrument could be replaced. Scott’s voice is irreplaceable. I’ve stated time and time again that Scott’s voice is my favorite out of any modern singers, and without it the RBF sound and image would be harmed greatly. If this is the end of the road for Scott, this is the end of my road for making an effort to stay involved with RBF. Don’t get me wrong, if a new album comes along, I’ll give it a torrent and check it out, but without Scott RBF isn’t RBF to me.

MemberMessage from Scott:
Dear Friends,
It is with overwhelming mixed emotions that I write this letter to announce my departure from Reel Big Fish. This decision has weighed heavily on the heart and mind of my wife and I. We found out in September that we were pregnant with our first child. A baby girl. We spent many nights debating back and forth over the subject of how to best arrange our lives to create the most safe and comfortable environment for our daughter. After much deliberation, we arrived at the conclusion that there was no way to create the home we envisioned without us both being present, to watch over and participate in the building of that home. Brick by loving Brick. In light of this announcement, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you all for making one of the most important phases of my life as beautiful and rich as anything I have ever known. The man I stand as today is a direct byproduct of all of you wonderful people who have allowed myself and the rest of the guys to be apart of your lives. Those of you who have allowed us to entertain you in an attempt to make real human connections through our music. You all are true blessings in my life and I will never forget all that you have done for the band, my bandmates, my family and for me. I will deeply miss watching you all, as you dance, smile, sweat and sing along. No one could ask for a better group of fans, (fans almost seems like too crass a word to describe you all, but i lack a better word at the moment). Your love and support have always been the fuel that make Reel Big Fish continue to move forward. And when I tell my daughter stories of my time in the band, I will probably become misty eyed, like I am now, when I remember all of your beautiful faces. Please take care of yourselves and those around you. And remember, don’t let your dreams stand waiting in the wings. Invite them center stage. They need to be seen.
Much Love and Respect, Scott Allen Klopfenstein

Well, he lives in New York while the rest of the band lives in California. And with a newborn kid, it would be difficult to travel across the country for an undetermined amount of time. Even if he does participate in studio recordings, it will probably be a long time from now.

MAX!MemberWow, I can’t believe this, not to mention that the way I found out about it was fucking shitty
I was just in Arizona and saw my favorite sports team lose a heartbreaking game in the national championship, to a team that is basically evil. Then yesterday I hadto wake up at 4:00 am my time and go to the worst airport in the world (Phoenix’s) for 14 hours to catch a flight to Seattle and drive 4 and a half hours to Eugene at 11:00. But then, there was a snow storm in Seattle, luckily I was able to leave at 5:00 am so I only missed one class. The drive took almost 7 hours due to snow and traffic. During the first half of the drive I was listening to Reel Big Fish the whole time, when I haven’t listened much in a while. Then, the 2nd half of the drive I listened to Scott Klopfenstein songs the entire time and talked with my girlfriend about how fucking talented he is and what an amazing singer and songwriter he is and how happy I was that he was still with RBF after all these years. Then I got home and feel inspired to check out this forum because I haven’t in forever and I was in a bit of a RBF/Scott listening high. I then saw the link to their new official website, which I was happy about them getting, clicked on it, and saw the farewell to Scott post which was just posted today. I now have a fucking calculus quiz in a couple hours, which was already going to rape me, and I’m fucking depressed about Scott leaving, I’m tired from the lack of sleep and amount of travel, depressed about the championship game, and just feel shitty. Fuck the last few days….Sorry about venting/whining, but I’m sure you guys probably feel just as shitty as I do about this, so hopefully you understand. -

Did he even really participate in the new stuff anyway? I just hope we get more from him now. He’s an amazing musician and I just want to hear more music from him which is why I’m not too bummed out about him leaving RBF because there just wasn’t enough Scott recently.
It does seem odd that he’s just done without any sort of last show or tour, it’s going to be at least five months till his baby is born so I’m sure he could do two more months of shows…

MemberI’ve watched more videos sans Scott. Matt’s voice is not as good (two of the songs were The Kids Don’t Like It, which he absolutely could not figure out the harmony to, and SHAGN, which…well…was bad), and the band kinda does suffer for lack of Scott’s instrumentalism.
Guys…I don’t think I’m interested in this band anymore.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XT9xmfRd_8s&feature=related Matt sucks at the harmony, and John’s solo in place of Scott’s is…well…bad. >_>
-
January 24, 2011 at 5:07 am #27583
The WindMemberIs Matt playing guitar as well, when he needs to?
I do like how they’ve moved Derek up front. And honestly, they will never, ever find someone who can sing as well as Scott.
-
January 24, 2011 at 5:47 pm #27584
SamuMemberFor the sake of honesty, it also takes some time to figure out harmonies.
IF the only reason for Scott to leave the band is his wife’s pregnancy, it must have been a rushed decision – leading to a rushed replacement for already booked concerts. It’s quite obvious that it will never sound the same, but let’s wait some months to see how big it will suck.(concerning John’s solo: he didn’t want to do that like the original, that’s Scott’s stuff and he wants to do his own – even if it occasionally doesn’t fit very well into the song. It’s not a difficult solo, even I can do that as the record one.) -

MemberAt least Matt seems excited to be playing the songs and it does look like he’s trying really hard to fill Scott’s shoes. And in all fairness his harmonies don’t sound good because Aaron’s main vocal lines don’t sound good.
It just seems like Aaron is trying to hold on to something that isn’t there anymore. At this point it just seems like a Job to him. They still have a huge fan base so they can still make a living touring, but he’s totally over it and the magic is gone. I really think he needs to start another band with a completely different group of musicians.
This just isn’t working anymore… would be a great title to their next album.

This is not how singing works. Scott’s harmonies sounded fine when I saw them a few months before his departure. Aaron’s voice has not gotten worse since then, it’s the singer of the harmonies that has gotten worse. This is not something you can blame on Aaron.
And Aaron has a new group of musicians. They’re called Reel Big Fish.

I recall an interview from a while ago, Aaron was talking about the time he broke his arm and got the dude from Kara’s Flowers to fill in. He said he wished he could do that, just sing and not play guitar.

Check it out, I have! Nice seeing you all, but I’m pretty far from where RBF is now and pretty much a lot better off than when I was posting around here. Not to insult whoever Aaron has in the band now, but membership issues aside I no longer really relate with anything in regards to the band’s lyrical direction, and their sound has been getting more and more stale since Cheer Up. So basically, I’d just like to say that- fans have totally moved on! And it’s a good thing!
So hey guys, you probably won’t see me around anymore (I don’t even use this screen-name anywhere anymore because it’s totally unlike me now), but I just wanted to give you all a quick message.
One thing I’d just like to add, Reel Big Fish is not getting bigger every year or their records wouldn’t have gone from selling gold to not even selling out one of the worst dives in Montreal. I’m not saying they should just give up, but to say they get bigger every year is simply not true.

Piss off JD, hopefully you enjoy your new found love for Justin Bieber

jrock241MemberI always thought Rock It With I was Robby Sager, James, Chris, or JD. In that order. I remember Robby saying that he met Rock It With I once before. But RIWI had claimed to be a short black guy that looked like Tyler Jones once, then another time he posted pictures as an asian dude….So that narrows it down every old RBF boarder here, because we’ve all trolled before.
As for JD, I think he’s just saying that he’s moved on and a lot of other RBF fans have also. He is right, the old skool Disco Aaron thread used to be the old boarders, now people like us [you know who you are] have become that, and just like them we’re no where to be found most the time. I guess where we differ is that we have hope for the new album.

kettner3000MemberJD! I was thinking about you the other day, man. Also, not expecting a response to this, soo…
Also, flattered you think Rock it With I is me, but it’s not. I haven’t trolled this board since Fag Magnet.Afro2kSong of the moment, started by HopeNovMembers ClubCaptain Crunch vs. J Scales“My Bitch”And I’m pretty sure Cheddar was mostly this board. Also, Limp Bizkit. -

SamuMemberSong of the moment, started by Hopewith a song the Ataris wrote for a friend of hers…
And I\’m pretty sure Cheddar was mostly this board. Also, Limp Bizkit.I think Cheddar appeared during the transition form the old to the new board… but true, his most glorious days were on this board.
Also, getting Rasked. -

jrock241MemberHaha, getting rasked. totally forgot about that one. I’m trying to think of then name Aaron supposedly used on the old board, did it have the word goat in it? Maybe I’m confusing that with something else.
I’m trying to think of other board related things. The old board died because of spam bots I think. I don’t even remember if we ever finished WHYBBeer. But the cover of Hate You [vocals by Matt Wixson] and All I want is More [vocals by Chris] is on this myspace page.
*AIWIMPT is the finished version. And Chris I really dig your vocals, your voice has character.

kettner3000MemberDo you think they would hate it? We had fun with the last one and it sounded pretty good. We should start this bitch up. Reel Big Cohen plays sax, too, so we could even do a new song.

Rock it With IMemberWait, I’m lost…… Are y’all talking about recording your individual tracks, and then sharing them for others to record theirs with, and then we all put em together and make a cover song together?
Because if so, I’m in! I play guitar (for 20+ years)
and if not, why not?? It sounds like an awesome idea

Rock it With IMemberOk, since I am being told “Hands off partner” when I try to edit my previous post, I will just post a new reply annoyingly…
On top of playing guitar, I also have a strong lead vocal voice and can sing Aaron Barrett very well.
I have a good friend nearby that has recording tools in his house, and also plays a good guitar.
Let’s friggin do this!!
