The WindMemberThis has been much discussed around here. In fact, right below this topic is a topic about it, you lazy person.
I'm going to need a source if you want me to believe you. How do you know that all their songs have been rerecorded?

But at the end of the day, it's taking the piss a little. Seems like the ultimate cash cow.

MemberShould just release it online. Physical copies probably wouldn't sell.
Re-recorded TTRO, ES, and Why Not? is all I want, though.
I really don't want to see White Trash touched. They couldn't possibly improve on the sound achieved on that album and unless they change some Cheer Up songs (like WHYB) then I don't want that either.
Plus if it's online, we can pick and choose what we want and be able to give RBF money straight on. It's not like we'll need a lyric booklet, right? :p
-

The WindMemberI'd buy a box set. Or each album individually. Try and stop me!
My preference lies in physical media.

MemberDifference is that I don't have the cash to buy it all at once. :p
Stores probably either wouldn't carry it or would overcharge for it around here, too. Montreal sucks when it comes to new releases. It sucks in general, as well.
As long as they give options other than "should we release it or not", that's the option I want.

Memberplease, please, please, please, please. I would Love a boxed set… hopeing they added the overseas bonus tracks to the lot…. everything sucks doesn't seem nessasary.
but, they could slap the remaining, un-re-recorded ES songs together with the "In The Good Old Days" songs, as well as "Make It Big" and "Doo-Doo" on a re-recorded disc and i'd be a very happy man.
a nice boxed set would be:
Re-recorded rarities disc, mentioned above
TTRO (Revisited)
WHITE TRASH (Revisited)
CHEER UP! (Revisited)
Why Not? (Revisited)
Live (Original)
Monkeys (Original)
The Complete Covers Volume 1 (all the covers pulling from live shows, tributes & albums)
The Complete Covers Volume 2 ( I believe the number is somewhere in the forties, It takes 2 discs)
You're All In This Together
Live! In Concert! -

MemberA box set would be fantastic, but I'm not sure it needs to be rerecorded. I mean, all I own is the Live album and I've heard most of the other stuff elsewhere. But if this included blank CD I'd buy it like that. I'll hold out on buying the originals for now…

SamuMemberIf this is going to be a sort of "RBF anthology", I'd throw in a booklet, not with lyrics of course, but with the band speaking about its own story, with pictures from the good old days and stuff like that.
And please include a final version of the "how Tavis got fired" story! -

MemberMysteries of RBF that need solving:
Tavis and Grant's firing
Aaron's switch from Ibanez guitars to the Les Paul
Why Aaron stopped using/sold the Les Paul
Why the Gordon-Smith sounds like men's asses live nowadays
Scott's beard (and the awesomeness it holds)
Is Matt Wong dead?
Aaron's emo haircut
Confirmation of Ryland's secret identity (Carlos)
A confession by Scott that he doesn't actually play trumpet, and that they just layer Johnny's trumpet over itself
Is Johnny just Tyler with bleached skin? We all know it's true, they need to stop denying it. -

– Aaron switched from Ibenez to the les Paul because Ibenez was sponsoring him until they showed up at an RBF show and he was playing a different guitar.while I agree the Gordon-Smith sounded like shit on the latest DVD, I aw the band play here in Brunswick last week and I'm glad to report it's been fixed. according to the YAITT Commentary it's a European model… maybe he couldn't get it fixed until the Ska Odyssey tour took them back over.
@AngryOpposum –
WHITE TRASH – Why Do They Rock So Hard?… because the abbreviation is WDTRSHWhy Not – is "We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy" since it's WNHTYNH

Cool! Do you know what guitar he was playing? Was it the SG?
I'm glad it's fixed, it sounds so beautiful when it doesn't sound like garbage and ass. But why didn't he just use a different guitar? He has others…

Sell Out
She Has a Girlfriend Now (but who will the girl be? They played this with Monique Powell when I saw them, actually, so maybe…)
Beer
Everything Sucks
Somebody Hates Me
The Set Up
Take on Me
Thank You for Not Moshing
I Want Your Girlfriend
Good Thing
Ban the Tube Top
Where Have You Been? (original pop-rock or ska-styled? Considering they've been playing the original live…)
The Fire
Don't Start a Band
Your GutsAnd 7 other songs that will undoubtedly surprise me that the band considers them "hits," whether I love the songs or not.

22. Brown Eyed Girl 3:02[/b]No thanks to the bolded. Only two songs from their worst sounding album is pretty weird, though, and so are songs from their last album. Why won't they rerecord Superhero #5 and Spin The Globe? Those two deserve better sounding versions. I don't quite get the point here.
I don't see any reason to rec this over the live album, or get the albums rerecorded in full instead and just let fans pick from them. A better sounding Why Not is also a huge missed opportunity, as Your Guts is the worst song on that album and Don't Start A Band is the single. Why are there songs from the last album at all and more songs from it than songs from Why Not? It hasn't been that long at all. We don't need another version of Take On Me, either.
I'm not getting who this is supposed to appeal to since there are better options for any audience that might want to purchase it.
This may seem harsh, but I also think the label's tracklisting for the best of was better, even though I wouldn't support it or tell anyone to buy it ever.
Wake me when there's a new album.

RBF doesn't have a big enough growing fanbase for people not to have heard these songs a million times already, be it on the studio albums or the live album or 3 DVD's!?
Reaks of desperation. Why complain about the big bad record company releasing the last one without their permission, and then go and release this through fucking Best Buy?

MemberSeriously, compare the two.
1. "Sell Out" – 3:47
2. "Take on Me" – 3:02
3. "She's Famous Now" – 3:05
4. "Don't Start a Band" – 3:18
5. "Cheer Up" – 2:42
6. "The Set Up (You Need This)" – 4:21
7. "Beer" – 3:30
8. "I Want Your Girlfriend to Be My Girlfriend Too" – 2:52
9. "Your Guts (I Hate 'Em)" – 2:07
10. "Ban the Tube Top" – 3:10
11. "She Has a Girlfriend Now" – 3:05
12. "Thank You for Not Moshing" – 2:41
13. "Everything Sucks" – 2:40
14. "Suckers" – 3:57
15. "The Fire" – 3:05
16. "Where Have You Been?" – 3:59
17. "Trendy" – 2:23
18. "Give It to Me" – 3:14
19. "One Hit Wonderful" – 4:19It's not perfect, but it also doesn't randomly give the shaft to their own album.
But again, with the first live album out there, I don't see any reason to rec any release they've done since then. The boxset might have been close, but this is just pointless.
Also, stop shafting What Are Friends For, RBF. It deserves being on a best of far more than Good Thing does.

MemberWait…THAT's the cover art?
I give up on Reel Big Fish. I know I shouldn't say that before I hear this (especially the acoustic stuff), but it's like they're not even trying anymore. Also, if all the acoustic tracks are labeled (skacoustic) on the album, I might kick something. Hard. I do like that it goes in chronological order.
Excited for:
She Has a Girlfriend Now (I like hearing it with new singers)
Suckers
New Version of New Version of You
Slow Down (single version) (because I had no idea it was a single…)Why am I not excited for anything else? Because it's already on the live album (so I essentially know how a modern re-recording would sound anyway), and especially if they're White Trash takes, which I'm pretty sure will sound dreadful in RBF's new stripped-down recorded style, if that's what they go for. Oh, and fucking Brown Eyed Girl, of all the FFF songs? Motherfucking Brown Eyed Girl?
Now as far as the…ugh…"skacoustic" songs go, I'm pretty much excited for all of them. I'm especially excited for the final five songs, because I can't really imagine what they'd sound like acoustic, for better or worse.
I mean, I'll download it. If I like it, I'll probably buy it. If not, I'll do what I started doing for Weezer: like them, but not tell anybody I like them for fear of them thinking I like the shit they're doing now. And I'll be even more wary for their new album, which I would have rather heard as opposed to a cover album, this thing, and the really poor sounding live DVD.
Rant over.

Membersurprising omissions:
She's Famous Now (fan favorite)
So Much or Rock 'N Roll (Just 'cause)
Skatanic (okay, I'm not surprised, just disappointed)Really wish there'd been no covers. I know they're popular, but they're not really RBF songs. I can live with it and will listen none the less.
hoping for a cool surprise with one of the songs… for instance a new take on something, like I'm Cool ES Vs. I'm Cool White Trash…. but I guess we'll have to see. also hoping for a cool bonus track…
hoping this album is being put out so they'll have multi-tracks for RBN and/or a big album to push during a kimmel performance.
I understand the reasons for going BB exclusive… I still wish I could pick this up from my local record store… especially since they've been so RBF friendly in the past.
am I the only one that thinks "Trendy" is one of the worst songs on TTRO?
I don't see the point in going Chrono. on a regular GH album it would make sense, 'cause it shows the progression of the band through it's studio career… but on this album all the songs were recorded at the same time, so there's no progression to be shone.
and FUCK! ENDING WITH BROWN EYED GIRL!?!?! RBF has so many good END SONGS: Last Show, Nothin', Don't Start A Band, Say Goodbye, All I Want Is More, Brand New Hero, Drunk Again, Go Away, Down In Flames, We Care, Big F&*%#$g star, One Hit Wonderful, Turn The Radio Off, The Joke's On Me, Hate You… there's more… so many great songs to end with and they went with Brown Eyed Girl? Do Not Like… but whatever… It might still be a good ending… just not great… hoping the disc says '23' when I put it in the drive.
-
June 26, 2010 at 6:52 am #26157
The WindMemberI don't think Trendy is the worse song, I think the TTRO recording makes it sound like a shitty song. So I'm up for that. The live version is great. It makes me actually like the song.
As for ending with Brown Eyed Girl, check out the tracklist. With the exception of Take On Me, they're sectioned off by album.

MemberThis will be the third (or is it fourth now?) version of Take On Me out there. It's a cover, we all know what it sounds like. It's not like they'll be doing anything different from it.
Trendy is the only "funny" song from TTRO that I actually still find funny. It's also the best live TTRO song easily, and as probably the one time RBF nailed 'clever' without sounding too snarky. The worst TTRO song is Alternative Baby, both from a production and song structure standpoint. No idea why that's a fan favorite.
I would want to see Big Fucking Star (the ska version) redone like that, Superhero #5, Spin The Globe, Say "Ten", Skatanic (since they rarely ever play it live), Fo' Head (for fun), The Last Show, Scott's A Dork (never really fit in with White Trash), I'm Cool (why not?), Say Goodbye, A-W-E-S-O-M-E, and Go Away. Stuff that would really benefit from being recorded again. If they wanted to end it on a cover, why did they pick that one?… Hell, why not ignore it since it's so recent? I don't think anyone would notice. Or care.

Could have done without another FU Song though, that one always screamed filler to me.

The fact that it has higher representation than Why Not is a bit insulting to the album. Especially when one of the songs they picked from it is the worst song on the album.

MemberI honestly like A-W-E-S-O-M-E, both as a serious song and an ironic song. I look at all the Why Not? songs very seriously (except maybe Your Guts), because they were written to be serious.
And now, performed, that level of seriousness is taken out, but that makes it fit well with their other songs. Also, why no The Fire? I love that song…
In fact, why no The Bad Guy? Why only "the hit" and the funny song? Why Not? is honestly my second favorite RBF album…

I am excited for the older stuff though.
Didn't someone say that they re-recorded all of their major label songs? Maybe this is just the first in a series of best of discs until they remember how to write songs again…

[/quote1277824946]Only New Version of You is re-recorded, and I guess the "single version" of Slow Down doesn't have the really long fade-out…which is a shame, because I liked that part.
And they better not do a series of best-of discs…that would make no sense, as opposed to four completely rerecorded albums released in that state. Maybe this is just a teaser, and if it sells well, they'll do that?
Either way, I'd want an album (or two) of new material before they put out anymore filler albums.

BradleystpMemberI saw the news about this Greatest Hits CD and had to come here and see what people, actual fans, were saying.
I have been a fan from the beginning, seen them countless times, bla bla bla…not gonna bore you with this crap…
I am glad I am not the only one that is losing interest with the Fish. Listen, I love these guys, and some of the recent stuff wasn't too bad, but I think it was the last covers album that really made me stop and say, "Are they just phoning it in at this point?" A couple of the songs are ok, but most are mediocre, and the one I hate the most is on the new Greatest Hits (Brown Eyed Girl, the worst, most generic, predictable, horrible RBF cover, ever). But the lack of new stuff is really sad, and they are about one more live/cover/split/live dvd/re-do album from me stopping caring at all.
I am looking forward to the re-recording aspect of the GH, but even then, I was more excited about a box set of complete re-recordings, not just "the hits", which is quite questionable in a few cases with this CD. And they better be changed a bit, or this whole thing was worthless. Some of the FFF cover songs were pretty uninspired in general, so it makes me worry about these re-recordings ending up lame and un-energetic too.
I really hope the next new CD is great, because it seems like even their hardcore audience is fading, and they may not have anyone left after that. I hate to see these guys go out like that. I know Aaron can still write a decent SKA song, (the FOE CD is proof that under good circumstances, the ideas are still there), so I am holding out to see what comes next.
And let someone else produce it. I don't mind how they sound really, but a little outside criticism never hurt anyone, and could really help them, I think.
Oh yeah, and is it just me, or are a lot of the new shirts in the store just ugly. I don't know if it is the new logo or what, but I go through them and think "Who would wear this hideous shit!". Bring back old-school standards – 'I Hate RBF', etc.
Rant complete. Thanks for listening guys.

MemberYeah, RBF's art has hit a nadir. It feels way too photoshoppy now.
But, keep in mind the last album was apparently more of an odds and sods mish mash and not really new. The remade songs told me they can still SOUND good when they want to, so I'm not worried. Heck, let's be honest, it's not like there was any way they were going to make those songs sound good. You can't make a turd shine.
I do think this new album is going to be the last straw for a lot of people. It's too bad, but the band did this to themselves. Most fans aren't as patient as those that go to a message board to post about them.

I second the motion above me. Just a picture of your hand holding the album or even just an audio snippet of one of the songs.
As to how you could know those things? Where Have You Been? lacking the solos is obvious when you read the track length. Having two different SHAGN singers is likely (equally likely as it being the same singer), and one would figure that Good Thing would keep the cheesy intro to be as faithful to the recording as possible.
To play along, how do the WDTRSH songs sound?

[/quote1279307131]Why Do They Rock So Hard and Turn the Radio off are the most noticiable in difference. Scott sings Coolie Ranx's vocals along with Aaron harmonizing on In The Pit. She has a girlfriend Now acoustic is the singer from Sonic Boom Six and the orignal version is another girl, new singer. And no, Good thing does not have the cheesy intro, just straight into the Haha and beginning of song. Sell out is sick. I was seriously surprised at really how well they re recorded these songs. they may have done the albums previously in 'multimillion dollar studios' but that was also over 10 + years ago for some of the recordings, hence they've bettered their craft and with Reel Big Fish behind the producing, they are getting the vision and sound out of what they really wanted from those songs, hence making them sound refreshing!

BradleystpMemberWell, I went out and bought it at lunch. Listened to the whole thing, and I don't really know what to say. I like the originals better, but I expected that to be the case anyway. I didn't think any of the songs were improved. Some of the singing is off, or just not good, in my opinion. Some of the vocals are actually cringe-worthy. I don't know why that is, but Aaron can't hit notes like he used to, and someone in the band likes to do 'crazy' voice, which is fine sometimes, but not all the time, and it gets annoying.
Some songs sound ok, some sound like they can't really do it like they used to anymore, especially the horn section. The horns just sound flat, especially in the older songs. Maybe because they had more horns back then, or maybe because they were younger and had more youthful spirit, or maybe it is the production, I don't know. A few of the songs sound a little slower than normal too.
The 'Skacoustic' songs are not great, not terrible, just meh. I was hoping for more of an acoustic sound, but basically it is the band playing normally with an acoustic guitar. I was a little disappointed with that.
I guess my question would be why not just release the songs recorded live, as they sound like they almost could have been anyway. (I am not asking for another live album here, but I have heard them play some of these songs better live).
My final thought: I will hold on to my originals and never let go.

MemberDouble-post!
Not only is the Best Of version of Take on Me awesome…the "skacoustic" version of it is great! One part a-ha, one part mariachi, one part Reel Big Fish. It's awesome, and certainly something different.
Plus, hearing Aaron fail on guitar at the bridge/solo thing is even funnier in the acoustic version.
EDIT: Acoustic track by track!
Sell Out and Beer are Sell Out and Beer with acoustic guitar. Nothing special, nothing new, but prefer them to the Best Of versions.
She Has A Girlfriend Now would be pretty good, I guess…but the singer sucks. Really badly.
Another F.U. Song was hilarious, and not what I expected.
Your Guts was an interesting new take on it. I liked the intro at the end.
Aaron still can't sing Suckers. Song should not have been done acoustic.
Where Have You Been is decent. Not a trainwreck like I expected. This version should have had the trumpet solo, though…it would have worked well.
Aaron's singing was not in time with the guitar playing in the intro, from the sounds of it…which is a shame. This isn't like a demo thing, it's a real album after all. Otherwise, see my above comments on Don't Start a Band. Amazing song in any form. Less amazing acoustically, but still a great song.
Hearing S.R. was just refreshing. A fun new take on it…y'know, besides the ten other new takes on it.
My copy of 241 is 2:40. This band never wins, I think that's the length of my TtRO version too. Great to hear this song revisited. 241 has always been a favorite of mine. Wish they had done it on the Best Of.
The Kids Don't Like It was great. Essentially what the song should be, just with an acoustic guitar. I think it worked well for the song. I wish they would play this song more often live…also Scott is an underrated trumpeter. "What don't they like?" "It!" SONG BANTER HOLY SHIT <3
And we get another underplayed WDTRSH? gem? Today is my lucky day and a lucky day for Reel Big Fish fans! I like the new horn stuff, and this song too benefits from the acoustic set-up. (As opposed to an acoustic Set Up, that wouldn't work too well…)
Nothin'. Wow, Reel Big Fish definitely forgot how to end an album. I mean, it's an okay version, but I don't think it's a very good ending.
This acoustic album is a great diversion, though I don't know how I'd feel if it was just a standalone product.

Memberfirst my gear, as this effects my review, I listened to this album imported to itunes @320kbps through Koss UR-40 headphones with now effects aplied.
first of all, presentation: I still hate the cover art, but probably because i'd seen the photo before and it just looked lazy to me… new fans will probably think nothing of it. package is housed in a 2-CD Jewel case with hindge at the spine, Ala-MFNATCFF, but higher-quality. Cd designs, IMO also leave something to be desired, no real theme here besides the color green (for some reason). nothing screams Reel Big Fish in any way… until.
Booklet: here it is, page 1/2 house a collage of current line up RBF live photos, which would be cool, had I not already seen them all… I think an oppurtunity has been missed… I feel like rare archive photos or live photos from different time periods would have been better… I much perfer the ES 2000 colage as it had a bit more to offer than "this is what we look like live"
Page 3/4 house thank you's and blurbs from the main lineup. a rough overview of the band's history and a corny, predictible joke from Aaron… still no word on why this album is so fucking green. blurbs are insightful and funny, this is already the best set of RBF liner notes since The Live Album.
Page 5/6: house the big tooth fish logo, Tracklisting and personnel credits. sort of Obligatory… nothing really interesting.
Page 7/8 is a collage of album/single art, which would also be cool if it didn't look like some threw it together with google and GIMP, many of the photos show compression damage and this kinda sucks because I imagine one of the band members owns "Everything Sucks" and has access to a scanner.
Page 9/10 hous more live photos plus a few current-lineup promo and random shenanigans photos. nice, but I've seen them.
Back of Booklet shows the drawing of Zombie RBF eating a boombox and has a Dave Grohl esque "Thease aren't our best, they're the ones people know" album christening.
Back of the album shows the track listing over that oldschool photo of aaron blowing bubbles (the kind of photo I would have LOVED to see in the collage). no matter, let's get down to business.
DISC 1 – "A BEST OF US…"
1. SELL OUT – Wow, Hell of an open, maintains the energy of the original and ads, every instrument improves apon the original TTRo part the guitars rock harder and sing sweeter. Scott's pipes are in top form, the horns are hornier, the drums are downright sexy and I begin to see what these renditions may have over the originals – Confidance. you can hear it in both aaron and scott's vocals (Aaron is 10 x better than he was in 96, Vocally). You can hear it in all the new parts, as well, the guys know all the songs by heart and now have found space to perfect them and, at least with this one, they've come a long way towards doing so.
I was inatially grossed out hearing the new production over my shitty car stereo, but once I was listening at 320bps through KOSS headphones, I can say that you guys will [Probably] not be dissapointed.
2. TAKE ON ME – I LOVE THIS! best version yet. Aaron's Kickin' ass on the vocals. so confident, drums and guitars hitting harder, HARDER! Scott's Background vocals and added "Take On Me"s are fucking sweet. sadly, it feels like the horns lag the tempo a bit at some parts, but it doesn't kill it. The crazy cool guitar bit in the solo is different… not better or worse but different… A LOT of the guitar work has been changed… I might like it better, though. true shiners here are vocals, drums and guitars. so far I havn't seen anything Impressive from the horns, let's move on.
3. THE BEER SONG – HOLY SHIT! The lyrics are "SHE won't bother me no more" not "YOU won't bother me no more", SO MUCH BETTER!. sadly, this song was a chance for Derek to step out and suck us up with his bassness.. unfortunatly… that doesn't happen. however, THAR BE ORGAN HERE! the organ adds a nice new texture to the song that shows a more mentally-messed up view of it, really plays to the scorce material, would have redone the drums… some of the fills seem llike first takes… you'll hear it. I still think this is the best studio version of THE BEER SONG to date.
4. SHE HAS A GIRLFRIEND NOW – The chick's vocals are not as good as mo's, but I can say they are at least different as opposed to trying to be mo's and failing. Scott and Aaron make up for her shortcomings. Guitars shine again! EXCEPT, Aaron's little "Ba-dap-ba-da" seems to be a little slow. the Trombone solo is pretty much the same one we've been hearing for years only with some added little tweedly bits. this is the first track on the album I'm not 100% sure I like better than the old school. still, well done.
5. EVERYTHING SUCKS – Aaron's voice is really feelin' this one, jammin' his snarky, apthetic character voice to the forfrunt.. Drums are ROCKIN' it. some of the transistions seem less organic, which makes them Jump right at you… but also makes them seem kind of werid. 2 F words instead of 3, extra "ba-da-ba…BA!" at the end. still one of my favorite RBF songs ever and this may be my favorite version. I do wish the guitar was a little quieter during the choruses.
6. TRENDY – OH MY GOD. I used to hate this song and now I LOVE it. it's like a whole new song! scott's shenanigans in the background make it boss, it just sounds like one big party the whole time… so much energy! God, MOST IMPROVED SO FAR! sure the initial "Joke" is gone now… but this version kicked the the shit out ofevery other, even live… horns finally Impress me. new guitar part in the verse is SOO COOL! the confidance remains and really shows in this one. so much fun.
7. I WANT YOUR GIRLFRIEND TO BE MY GIRLFRIEND TOO – Scott and Aaron are fucking locked in on this one. Both impress vocally again. and the drums are still tearin' it. Love the new guitar solo. this one made me adjust my volume to go louder. I really wanted to rock. Drums shine here, with vocals tied for first… mixing isues are present and the vocals sould be louder during the first chorus… but it's no biggie.
8. "IN THE PIT" (I liked the old title better) – OH! it's "Look out, MAN" I always thought they were saying "FAG!". I wish I minded that change, but while it does me the song less satirically accurate, it makes it easier on new fans. so whevs. If you were afraid of of WHITE TRASH re-records, have no fear, they're beautiful. the Bass finally shines and the songs might even have MORE atmosphere than the old-schools. HOLY SHIT! NEW TROMBONE SOLO AND IT FUCKING OWNS! OH MY GOD! SKYDIVE SOUNDS FUCKING BADASS… like it's done by the ying yang twins or something. I HAVE A FUCKING BONER! so many layers here, feels evven DEEPER THAN WHITE TRASH. LOVE IT.
9. THE SETUP (YOOU NEED THIS) – GOOD LORD I LOVE THIS ALBUM. this song from square one is improved, weirder, poppier, a little more, off the wall. Drums again giving it to your ass hard. vocals are great again.Synth has been busted out with no apologies. the sparceness of the short horn break followed by the guitar slams is fucking sweet. I LOVE SCOTT KLOPFENSTEIN. great job on this one, outro is still here and better than ever… ends on a nice "ahhhhhh" sort of fade. beautiful.
10. SOMEBODY HATES ME – guitar has some trouble getting it on in the beginning. After that, it's great. Vocals are top notch again. Scott showing some snarky ness to match Aaron ( which has been happening a lot and I love it). Dan seams to have lost his confidance in this one, sadly… trombone solo sounds like a deflating baloon. finnishes BEAUTIFULLY! well done!
11. YOU DON'T KNOW – smacks right into this one, no count off. Aaron, master of the angry vocal is here. I used to love this song, now I REALLY love it. Scott is a boss, again. DEEP DEEP RECORDING, guitar solo is more of an ensamble piece now. even if it seems like the drums fight the rest during this part. after that the drums still rock. great job, better than original.
12. SUCKERS – what song is th- HOLY FUCK DRUMS! Aaron comes in with an even angrier vocal than on the original here. he's using some technique in the held notes that makes his voice sound like sandpaper on a bed of tacs. not a fan of the mixing in this one. VOs are neat.GUITAR PART! if it were a woman, i'd obsess about it and never make a move and then regret it the rest of my life. has the live ending. NICE!
13. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? – had to pause after the guitar intro to catch my breath. sounds 100X better than the SEE YOU version. then the vocal comes in, and makes your ears love you. could have had less wah in the guitar. Vocals are spot on again. scott must have actually BEEN IN THE STUDIO for this one. to answer your question: it is the SEE YOU version, not the OLAIBTYLA version. but in the end, it's more it's own version. drums are still owning, vocals still owning. ending is sweet.
14. GOOD THING – Guitar takes control and does not let go. so cool, lots of new stuff on this album… not one song is the same old same old boring. scott wails in this one. Aaron is now probably my 3rd favorite singer, he's really impressed me on this one. end is even more layered than the original… all of these songs have had really beautiful endings… so nice and unexpected…but they've masstered it.
15. BAN THE TUBE TOP – AWESOME OPEN! pretty much same as the old only with better production for the first two veresus/choruses. bridge is slightly different. guitar/horn call/answer is slightly different. it's good, but nothingreally new here.
16. DON'T START A BAND – Angrier from the get go. guitars at the forefront, some new intonations being pulled out on the vocals. reggae part is really great, kudos, Derek.
this song is stripped way down, but it benifits it in some ways. scott's high pitch wail in the back is pretty crazy. cool effects on the quiet part. once again, while it's stripped down, there's SO MUCH DEPTH and there's lots of layers. more horns too.17. YOUR GUTS (I HATE 'EM) – this song immediatly sonds better without all the crappy (let's make this sould like an old reggae record" production. they had some fun with this one. sounds way better and has lots of fun vocal parts.
18. ANOTHER F.U.SONG – This is a new version (at least in part) as "Fuck cursing" has been added. it's pretty much the same besides that. it's not that I dislike the song, it's just not different so there's no reason to give it that much attention in this review that is supposed to talk about the new stuff.
19. THE NEW VERSION OF THE NEW VERSION OF YOU – sounding better, organ's in the spotlight. much more life in this version. first chorus sounds vocally bare… and the vocals are again too quiet. everything else is much stronger. scott rocks it.
20. PARTY DOWN – not new.
21. SLOW DOWN (SINGLE VERSION) – THIS IS A RE-RECORD! organ comes in full force! background vocals kick ass. really add ambiance. I really like this version a lot more. guitar sounds really nice. same scott descant as on MFNATCFF. fades out before it falls apart.
22. Brown Eyed Girl – not new.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
overall, this is a FANTASTIC CD. Every song has been improved by the process and I really love it. my main issue is the mixing isues here and there. but that's just little shit. so good. those that are skeptical should pick it up ASAP. you'll love it.REVIEW OF DISC 2 "SKACOUSTIC" COMMING SOON!

same gear.
for those wondering, it's not just aaron and guitar it's the whole band… ala the acoustic live show they did recently only less shitty.
THIS IS A BONUS DISC, NOT AN ALBUM, IT SAYS SO ON THE PACKAGE, THAT'S HOW I'M VIEWING IT.
1. SELL OUT – HAH, tambourene. this song sonds like a fun pop song over this beat.really sweet groove going on here. scott and arron are locked in again. they've gotten good at that recently.
2. BEER – pretty standard, we've heard it a bunch. Solo's pretty tits. Love the drums on the reggae part.
3. TAKE ON ME – THIS is the good shit. starts off like zorro and gets into a fuckin' groove. solo part is funny, A for effort, Aaron. ending is tits. it's solid throughout… great ending.
4. SHE HAS A GIRLFRIEND NOW – BRITTISH CHICK! she's good but kind of annoying. not much chaned from there, not really much of a stretch from the original recording to make this one acoustic.
5. ANOTHER F.U. SONG – hahaha, big "FUUUUUUU" opening into really sparse verse, awesome… I really like this version… almost as good as "Angry Antherm #347"
6. YOUR GUTS (I HATE 'EM) – grove on this is fuck awesome, and background vocals. might be my favorite version. the acostic version makes it even funnier. also, they go back to the beginning vamp at the end… nice touch.
7. SUCKERS – cool dum stuf on this, bongos this one really benefits from the acoustic treatment as well… taken in a calmer, more musically oriented direction. it's become clear that with the songs shared with "A BEST OF US…" this CD uses the same vocal tracks. I'm okay with it. love the string scratch
8. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? – not much new here, drums are the coolest part. last choruses are cool. it's not that I don't love the acoustic versions it's just that they're different enough that I have nothing to compare them to.
9. DON'T START A BAND – I really love this version. The Shakers and background vocals make it party. I can just imagine RBF in a cafe bangin' this one out on stools. would have been cool to have had a more sad sort of ballad version of this. just to see it… but i'm more than fine with this.
10. S.R. – hahahahahaa – bridge part is awesome, rest is pretty much the same, "ganster shit" line is awesome. with fun little extra bit at the end.
11. this song sounds straight up Traditional ska now… like a brother to Prince Buster's "One Step Beyond". trumpet solo is fucking sexy. bongos are the balls.HORN DUEL! OH FUCK IT'S ON!
12. THE KIDS DON'T LIKE IT – pretty much the same only acousticy. not bad, just what you'd expect. background yells are cool.
13. SCOTT'S A DORK – once again, what you'd expect – AWESOME.
14. NOTHIN' – clearly an afterthought, but great. just a fun bonus track… it's a bonus CD I wasn't expecting a big end.

BradleystpMemberAfter I read Sonic's review, I started second-guessing myself, and listened to the whole thing again. I still stand by the statement that I don't think any of them are better than the originals, but a few of them are pretty good. The vocals still bug me on a few of the songs. They either sound uninterested, too over the top, or just not in key properly or something.
So I still would not give it a glowing review, but it is ok. Not great, but not awful.

I went in there today and they were no help, maybe the album was in the back room and not out yet… I just tried to call up the store to ask if they had it in stock but NOBODY answered the phone and I called more than once.
Why is this only available at Best Buy? I hate Best Buy with a passion. I had $180 in gift cards from my work and I could never find anything there to spend them on because I could get the same item for half the price on Amazon.com without tax and without shipping… Best Buy sucks.
When will this be on a torrent or can someone send it to me? RBF don't even have any of the songs on their myspace for us to hear… I just want to know what it sounds like…

Wow, I'm half way through the album right now and the distorted guitar is getting really annoying, it's so much louder than it should be. This is lame, I would like to hear the other instruments. The performances do sound good most of the time, I just can't hear them over the guitar.

As for Scott's vocals, they were great. I like Scott's voice for the character, the passion and the soul behind every line… and that was still very present voice crack or not.
regarding slow down, I believe some parts were re-used, as stated, such as Scott's descant, however, I believe the guitar, lead vocal and organ (at least) were new… which is enough for me to consider it a re-record.
and the "In The Pit" thing was a joke, sorry if it didn't come across that way. as for changing up the lyrics… Aaron didn't make any lyrical changes that made no sense to me. he changed "Fag!" to "Man!" because it made the song a little more accessible (kind of the point of the package), he changed "You won't bother me no more" to "She won't bother me no more" because it makes more sense. and he made a few other lyrical changes because vocalists to that to keep things interesting… I quite enjoyed the differences… but maybe that's because I sing.

However, is anyone else getting s distinctive Farewell-album feeling from this?
My friends and I saw RBF earlier this month and the whole band is showing their age, most notably Aaron. Just a year ago he was much more youthful with his stage presence. -

[/quote1279715760]I wasn't trying to argue with you, I was really just saying that I was blown away by how much you liked the album, and I came up with a reasoning as to why. I usually like albums better on first listens, and the fact that I didn't probably means that I'll like it better as time goes on. Who knows though, maybe I won't, and in a month's time I'll think it's the worst thing they've ever put out (doubtful), but like I said, I really did enjoy it. But not so much that every song blew my away like it did apparently for you. Just stating my differences from you, not trying to start shit. I even said "If you really like it that much, good for you." I don't know what more you wanted me to do to try to make it more neutral. Don't get so worked up.
As for Scott's vocals, they were great. I like Scott's voice for the character, the passion and the soul behind every line… and that was still very present voice crack or not.
Uh…let's go ahead and "agree to disagree" on this one, because I could write so much about the "passion and soul" (or lack thereof) behind that one line alone on this album. If one thing bugs me about this album, it might be that one line of vocals, and there's a reason behind it.
regarding slow down, I believe some parts were re-used, as stated, such as Scott's descant, however, I believe the guitar, lead vocal and organ (at least) were new… which is enough for me to consider it a re-record.
It sounds like Aaron re-recorded the vocals for all the Monkeys songs, and may have rerecorded the drums. I still can't tell if they were rerecorded or just reproduced. It doesn't affect that songs enough for me either way, but I'm going to go crazy finding all the differences in the aftermath of this album's release.
and the "In The Pit" thing was a joke, sorry if it didn't come across that way. as for changing up the lyrics… Aaron didn't make any lyrical changes that made no sense to me. he changed "Fag!" to "Man!" because it made the song a little more accessible (kind of the point of the package), he changed "You won't bother me no more" to "She won't bother me no more" because it makes more sense. and he made a few other lyrical changes because vocalists to that to keep things interesting… I quite enjoyed the differences… but maybe that's because I sing.
I sing too, but I find little vocal things to be more appropriate for when you're doing a song live, not re-recording them brand new. Some of them did make sense (fuck cursing made the song a little more ironic, etc) but others just seemed out of place to someone familiar with the songs like I am. (Not trying to imply that you're not familiar with the songs) Maybe after a few listens, I'll like them more, but I was taken aback by how spur of the moment some of them seemed.

The WindMemberI think they forgot to record bass on The Set Up. Is it just me? I can't hear it at all. Oh wait. It's there, a little bit, in the chorus…
But no awesome riff at the end of the verses, or that sick thing Wong did on the live album. This version could have been way better, but they ignored the bass. -

MemberAfter one listen, these things come to mind:
Somebody Hates Me – Horns are dissapointly loose.Suckers – Vocals really aren't very pleasing. I personally loved the more held back high register vocals from the
Cheer Up version. These ones have no subtlely in them.Don't Start A Band sounds nice. Really wish they'd re-done the Fire or Last Show or something from We're Not.
Slow Down just has some new overdubbed vocals and keys, along with a little remixing, which gives it and Party Down a lot more life. Sounds lovely, but they're not re-records.
New Version of You IS a re-record, better by far than the Monkeys version but let down by lead vocals.
If one word sums up what these are lacking compared to the original, it's bite. Especially the guitar. It needs more… bite.

I get it. The song was written in the perspective of a meathead in the pit. They're not actually a band that preaches hate (or moshing for that matter.) But for people who were being introduced to the band and their sense of humor for the first time may not see it that way.

MemberThe original lyric, not to mention the title "Thank You For Not Moshing," were better. The whole point of using the word "fag" was to show how objectionable the violent jerk in the mosh pit is–he would use that word. I don't think anyone who paid attention to the song would think that Aaron actually dislikes homosexuals, and it's pretty silly to accommodate people who are too lazy to really listen to the song.
As for this album, I hope Reel Big Fish sells a lot of copies and makes tons of money off having the rights to these songs again (they deserve it!), but I only see an economic point to making the CD, not an artistic point. I'm also not thrilled with the song choices, which don't show off everything the band can do–the band's taste in its own music sometimes seems to tilt towards the silliest, most "ska" songs, when their overall body of work is more of a mix of styles. Still, I've enjoyed all of their original albums, and look forward to the next one.

I gotta say, Some songs they remade are pretty interesting. Sell out I'm kind of disappointed. It didn't have that same Magic as Turn the Radio Off. I like all of the Cheer up Songs they remade. For The First time, I finally like Where have you Been? I'm just kind of mad that they only did 2 songs from We're Not happy. Drinkin and Turn the Radio off should of been there >:(
Other then that, yeah, it's an ok listen. What surpise me is that I thought Turn The Radio Off Songs should of been remade, but yet, there not that good. Guess you can't beat the Orignal Mid-90s Sound Stuido 😛

[/quote1279820313]I think it's good that they didn't do more songs from We're Not Happy. They wouldn't have turned out well. Aaron just doesn't have that rage anymore, and I don't think he wants to go back to the production that was unique to the album. Maybe they could've redone The Fire or something, but some of the more angry songs wouldn't have benefited from the clean production.
And it wasn't the production that makes the Turn the Radio Off songs lack…it's the heart. Sell Out and Beer just don't sound like fun the way they did on Turn the Radio Off, or even on the live album. I just think maybe they've played those songs one too many times. In comparison, She Has a Girlfriend Now and Trendy sound just as fun ever, so it's not like they can't make the songs sound fun. I would definitely label Sell Out as the most "overproduced" song on the album, just because it seems like the band did everything they could to make their signature song sound "perfect."

AdminKeymasterI think the acoustic version of She Has A Girlfriend Now with Kaila Khan is now my favorite version of the song. Also I really am enjoying the new version of Thank You For Not Moshing, which is now called In The Pit as of the live album I guess. Where Have You Been is finally listenable for me, even more so on the acoustic disc. I absolutely love acoustic Sell Out, Beer, and especially Take On Me. I'm really happy with this album.

And, for the record, Thank You For Not Moshing was actually called In the Pit before it got its better (but less convenient) name. And yeah, I guess now Aaron has decided it's back to In the Pit. The version on this album actually sounds more akin to the original version anyway, especially considering Dan's solo and stuff like that.

The girl who did it on the re recorded version, Katrina, should by far, have done the acoustic one as well. I like the style with which Monique and Katrina sang, where they were clearly able to get high notes but weren't afraid to go into the lower register with a soulful type thing to their voice either. In fact, that's what I like a lot about Scott's voice, too.
Plus Monique sang with them when I saw them live and it was blissful.

[/quote1280521411]I actually like it a hell of a lot better than I thought I would. I can count the songs I dislike on one hand. Some of the songs I initially disliked are growing on me, but I think Somebody Hates Me and Suckers will stay unforgivable for me.
The acoustic versions were both pleasing and disappointing at the same time. They sound cool, but I'm disappointed that the vocals and horns are carried over from the re-records.
It's not perfect by any means, but it's a neat little collection. Definitely something better to tide until the next real release, compared to FFF and Live in Concert! (which I didn't dislike as much as some others here did, though the guitar tone was pretty shitty).

I was fairly optimistic about the quality of the recordings, and am fairly disappointed. The Set Up, is there even a bass? Unreal!Although, JD, if you don't plan on listening to the rerecords, give some of the acoustic songs a shot, that disc is almost worth the purchase alone.
But not Suckers.

MemberI have to disagree with even that – there are maybe a few worthwhile acoustic songs, but at the end of the day they're just the original songs played with an acoustic guitar. I was expecting a whole lot of messing around with the songs which isn't the case.
I get the feeling that this album would be a lot more enjoyable if I was relatively new to the band, but since I'm not, and since they haven't really taken the opportunity to personalise these songs a bit, it just feels like I already own these songs (yes, it's a best of, but you know what I mean).
Oh and screw you JD – I was all like "give the album a chance before you criticise it." I guess I sort of assumed Aaron would be able to notice WHEN HE'S SINGING A FEW MILES OUT OF TUNE.
That said I'm not gonna learn my lesson from this and I'm gonna give the next release a chance, because at the end of the day it's an overall improvement on FFF albeit in the same way a slap in the face is an improvement on a punch in the crotch – It doesn't really hurt as much but it's got the same general intention.

Song was stripped down to the point of humorousness, and the fact that they were the original songs played with acoustic guitar worked for some of them, like Scott's a Dork and The Kids Don't Like It. Plus, Take on Me sounded fantastic, and I think that owes largely to Ryland's drumming on the song.

SamuMemberHey guys, I haven't listend to FFF nor the "best of" yet, are they any good? LOL.
Seriously, there was no voice inside telling me to buy these – or even download them. I'm just not curious about them and I reckon these as steps of a (bad) trend the band is apparently taking. Not to mention the unnecessary DVD.
I'm not mad at the band for "betraying" the fans or childish stuff like that, I'm still thankful to them for all the amazing songs they've done in the past, but I think the "golden age" of RBF is gone, as far as songwriting, energy and creativity concern. They're all well over 30 now, inspiration doesn't last forever and that's all acceptable.
That been said, I think they still have the potential to do something good, or even great, with the new album; I just don't expect it, at the moment.Obviously, I'm still eager to see them live if they ever come back any near to me.

MemberReally I like some of the Re-recordings. I mean, To Tell the truth, All The songs from TTRO Beside Sell out NEEDED to get remade because of the poor recording sound. And yeah, White Trash Got some great songs in there too, The Set Up is nice, In the Pit is better, and I want your Girlfriend is the best. Cheer Up got some nice songs, beside suckers, and Like I said before, I finally like Where have you been.
My Only Problem is that they would put the Fuck You songs on there greatest hits album. Your Guts and F.U. Song both are bad songs, but there Fuck you songs, They're meant to send out a message to the people you hate 🙂
And I Wish they put more songs from Monkeys and Chimps. I Had to say that had to be there best album to date to me, I like almost ever song there 🙂
And My thoughts For FFF is the same as everyone else, Most of the Cover songs they pick were uninspired. But I won't lie to you guys that I sometimes like to listen to Poison's songs, Keep a Cool Head, Brown Eye Girl, Won't Back down, and sometimes Twist and Crawl.

[/quote1281096767]I personally liked the production values of TtRO and White Trash, though I know some people here didn't. Why Not? was intentionally bad-sounding…but Cheer Up! ? Poor recording sound? Does not compute. You may not like it, but it was nowhere near poorly recorded.

I'm Her Man needs some more love. Always.

I listen to Nothin' But a Good Time and a few others, but I definitely think the album as a whole just sucks.

MemberI wasn't talking about the whole production value of all the RBF album, Sure White Trash and Cheer Up sound great, but to mean, TTRO and Why not? Didn't sounds so well recorded.
I really dislike Your Guts ( I Hate'em) and Another F.U. Songs. The only time I would ever listen to them songs would be when I pissed off to someone. They were cool at first, but now I wish they stop playing this at live shows
Monkeys and Chim[s Was a great album, I mean, Everybody Drunk and another day in Paradise still need more love (Not counting the Chimps Side of that record)
I thought FFF suck too. Most Waste Of time to download off iTunes to me

SamuMemberI slightly disagree on single songs evaluation: Everybody's drunk is somewhat funny but defintely not a song to be remembered, while in my opinion Your guts is just brilliant. On the other hand, I really dig what they did with Another day in paradise. But this is going off topic.

And seriously, I love that version but Scott's vocals borderline ruin the song. What was he thinking?

The WindMemberI just today received the album in the mail. A few thoughts on liners notes:
1. Congrats to Amy. That's pretty cool, making it in the "Thank Yous"
2. Matt Wong plays bass for the Monkey's tracks. So, obv, those are rerecorded. I don't know if that was still up in the air.
3. After reading the, uh, letter on the back, I accept the track list. These guys are people, after all, no matter how much we demonize them. The mix is still pretty bad though. -

[/quote1284608542]What? I didn't know Matt was the current bassist for Reel Big Fish.
They credit him because the bass track on the Monkeys songs is his original bass tracking from 2007.

I Can't blame them.I mean, sure they did the "From the Beginning to Now" thing, but I hate that. Sure Alot of the songs they re-recorded are ok. Like I said, I can finally start to like Where have you been?
I really don't like the Skacoustic CD. They pretty much put the same re-recorded songs only but putting a acoustic guitar in the mix. Really the only tracks on that I liked were the last few tracks (Don't Start A Band, S.R., 241, The Kids don't like it, Scott a Dork, and Nothin)
And even the last few tracks are ramdom. S.R. I could understand. But seeing 241 and Scott a Dork just bugged me. -

ReelBigCohenMemberYea sadly it is really bad. I just don’t like the production quality. I think that’s what makes it seem bad to me. The horns are just soooo BRIGHT and Aaron’s voice is in the pooper for most of the album…. Let’s hope for something soon….
