I first heard Reel Big Fish in 2000, when playing the Sega Dreamcast game Samba de Amigo. An abbreviated version of Take On Me was an unlockable song.

I first heard them in 2001, on the Kansas City stop of the Crouching Fish, Hidden Finger tour. Rx Bandits, Zebrahead, Goldfinger, and Reel Big Fish played (in that order). The Internet says Home Grown played before Rx Bandits, but I don’t remember them being there.

I’d say Ryland’s gig with the band America is what came up ahead of the tour. If that became permanent, it probably pays well enough that he’d do it full-time.
