People seem to think it will destroy the earth.

Seems like a girl in India killed herself just before the LHC was turned on, because she feared the end of the world. Two questions:
1) if the world is going to end, why would you want to kill yourself? You're going to die anyway.
2) shall we blame television, or newspapers, or bad parenting, or just plain ignorance?

They had to turn the machine down; apparently a superconducting magnet malfunctioned, the proton beam hit a wall and broke it, spoiling vacuum and liquid helium, which is the way supcon magnets are cooled, so other magnets malfunctioned and so on.
Ouch!
