Too many Americans on this board 😛

Actually, up to now I've been able to watch only a tiny bit of England-USA.
I'll postpone any comment on the topic to after we play Paraguay tonight.

As a goalkeeper, I think I'm the only one I know who reckons Green should get another shot against Algeria.

That said, you can still see the palm marks on my face.

I've always thought Green was England's best keeper. He made 1 mistake, eh's usually amazing. If we get rid of him now it'll destroy him and then if we need him cos of injury or something, it'll be more pressure on him. We just need to build up any lost confidence by playing him in the next 2 games that we should win.

Yeah, to be honest I'm more worried about us getting something past the Algerian keeper – he looks crazily good.

It seems to be a tough time for keepers. The only two guys which were able to impress me are Eneyama (Nigeria) and Stekelenburg (Netherlands).

I agree with Adam on Green, if he's put out now he'll be finished.

After seeing Spain lose to Switzerland and North Korea score to Brasil, I'm getting convinced than anything can happen.

    • #26066

Fuck that piece of shit ref. Screwed the US out of a fucking game-winning goal on a no-penalty. Not to mention Slovenia was blatantly holding the US players so, if anything, it should have stood with a penalty against Slovenia.

Motherfucker might have screwed the US out of the cup.

Why is it that our english players are some of the best in the world, but when they pull on an England shirt, they're absolutely fuckin' dire.

You're right Jon, you should have won that, but England aren't complaining, increases our chances of getting through. A group that we were over the moon about when it was drawn, and now we might not even get through.

    • #26094

Another great game for England against Algeria. Two outstanding outings for the brits so far. Will they make it three with Slovenia?

Well if we don't beat them, I bet Fabio gets sacked. As if it'd be his fault.

    • #26096

I'd say it's more the fault of whoever it was that hired all those models to play soccer for England.

Noone plays soccer for England, we play a little game called football. Barely.

We must beat Slovenia, I simply can't fathom a team of our 'quality' not pulling out enough to secure qualification – they've just been taking it too easy so far. And using the wrong formation – Heskey shouldn't be anywhere near the World Cup and I have no clue why Joe Cole isn't being used…

Here's the line up that we should be using given our available players:

——————GREEN (I'm pretty angry about his replacement)

      Johnson——Terry—–Dawson—-A. Cole

      ——————Barry

      Lennon——-Lampard————-J. Cole

      ————————Gerrard

      ——————Rooney

With Dawson replaced by Carragher when he returns from suspension.

That said I'm sure Capello's got enough up his sleeve to get us into the knockout stages.

Really? His replacement didn't allow any goals. And had fabulous hair while doing it.

USA needs to beat Algeria. Then the soccer cup can be ours!!

    • #26105

Maybe the brits should try this against Slovenia:

That been said, luckily France is doing worse than us. If we're kicked out by Slovakia it will be pretty hilarious. But I'm confident that if and when we get to meet a good team (Holland mnost probably in the eighths), we'll do a pretty good game – catenaccio and breakback.

USA… you lucky guys, 91st minutes score ad 1st place in the round!

    • #26123

I'm not sure about lucky. There were some pretty unlucky calls and misses, too. Say, the elbow that Algeria got away with…the handball call around the 88th minute even though it was a chest bump. There were a few odd calls but I guess that's just how the game goes?

Congrats America, but you got lucky! (Not least in match 1…)
After watching the highlights I'd say you guys should be worried for not scoring more… still, at least you made the chances against Algeria that we didn't – I'm not exactly satisfied with the England performance either; we let too many opportunities go to waste, we should have won by a comfortable margin in our game too.

Fingers crossed for Ghana or Serbia in the second round.

      Lol on France btw.

Really? You've got a looser defence to deal with in Ghana and they haven't really yet shown a true cutting edge in the final third where they seem to get nervous and rush their shots – one goal could well be enough to beat them. Germany on the other hand have potential game changers in Ozil and Lahm to name but 2. That said England should have enough class if they play the confident passing game that they displayed on many occasions against Slovenia.

      Come on lads!

Popenko (think that was his name) must feel like the greatest footballer alive. Plays as a sub for a country that's never been in the world cup finals before and he himself had never played in the world cup before, he comes on and his first touch of the ball scores the goal that knocks the current world champions out of the cup. What a story to tell the kids!

      SO hilarious.
I mean, we very well deserved to get kicked out. I'm not even angry or sad, more like amused in a "WTF?!LOOOL" way.
Our trainer was in total confusion – 3 matches, 3 different line-ups, always spending all 3 substitutions within the first hour.
The defence was plainly embarassing, how can you get a goal from throw-in?
Too many unforced errors, the lads were simply in panic yesterday.

It was the worst Italy I've seen in my life, by far. When we got kicked out of Euro2004 at least we played two decent games, besides we had Cassano in, one of our best strikers. He was not within the 23 this time: Lippi hates him for some reason (rumors say he punched Lippi's son in the face in a brawl some years ago and I tend to believe this)

The most hilarious thing is, when we finally decided to move our golden shiny asses and actually play some football (around the 80th minute), we scored twice. That's how bad Slovakia actually is.

Unlucky USA. I think in the end the better team won it though. I must admit I thought you'd make it through that game. Never mind, now you can help us cheer on England!

    • #26159

The defense sucks but moreso, I think it's poor passing that lead to bad defense. Any kind of pass that wasn't from the foot was given away to Ghana. It was almost like they were hitting the ball just to hit the ball rather than to actually move it along to a teammate. Atrocious game from a team that should have done a lot better.

Left the pub after the 4th German goal. Atrocious defending… I'm surprised how unbothered I am – I guess I knew this would happen after our highly unremarkable group campaign.

Oh and just awful refereeing on Lampard's goal, but the team really shot themselves in the foot anyway by desperately pushing up and leaving huge holes in defence. If we really were the better team we'd've been able to score more goals and the disallowed one wouldn't have mattered – as it is the Germans went on to score 2 more goals so it really doesn't matter anyway.
As for goal line technology, I could take it or leave it – I'm quite fond of the human error aspect to football.

I'm all for Holland, I even bought an orange shirt to show my support down the pub. Although I've also gotta admit that the Germans are playing some beautiful football right now and are the team that look most like winning the whole thing… that said, the teams that perform brilliantly usually falter so based on that I'm gonna say that they won't win it. That, or it'll be one of the most impressive WC campaigns in history.

Spain have been disappointing, in fact I'm surprised they've reached the semis putting in the performances that they have – I guess that shows just what a good team they are though, doesn't it?

My last post couldn't have been more spot-on.

Seriously, fuck Spain – they've made it to the final playing some of the most boring football of the competition.

Unfortunately now it seems more likely that Spain will win than the Netherlands, unless the Dutch can sort out their tendency to have defensive lapses. If they can manage that then they could pull it off seeing as they seem more capable of finishing opportunities than the Spanish do what with their frustrating attempts to walk the ball into the net.

Both teams will score at least once in the final, that much seems certain, but who scores more depends on whether the Dutch manage to fix that back line or not.

I just won £15 from the makers of my deoderant. They did an online sweepstake, I entered the code on the can and got Uraguay. They got to the semi's, I get £15. Not bad 🙂

Got Germany in my other sweepstake, if they win 3rd place, i'll get £8 too.

And they will finish third place.

And Adam, surely you didn't want Germany to win. I agree Spain's football gets frustrating, sometimes u just want them to lob it in the box and have a go but you gotta admit, the rest of their play is fantastic. No one can hold and play a ball like Xavi. They really do play the beautiful game.

    • #26343
      madamadam

But that's the thing: they don't. They play keep-the-ball well, but as far as exciting football goes they don't offer much. I liked the way Germany played with confidence and spirit when they pounced on England and Argentina – I'm rather disappointed they didn't show more of the same against Spain.

We need more teams like the 70's era Dutch and pre-Dunga Brazil. It really annoys me when teams play the Barca tactic of showing their superiority by starving the opponent of the ball but without exploiting it to provide any real action.
