how many people here still consider the fish their favourite band?

and what about ska being a favourite genre?

I still consider them my favourite band, I just hardly listen to them anymore.

What an interesting question. My first reaction would be to say no. I much more enjoy listening to other bands, none of which play ska. They are definitely my favourite ska-based band, but over the past few years I've just drifted away from ska, though not completely. I'd rank RBF in my top five, maybe top three. But first? I think they lost that place to The Strokes long ago.

RBF was never my favorite band nor was Ska ever my favorite genre of music.

That said, I still enjoy Ska and RBF's older stuff quite a bit.

Ska has done nothing appealing in the last several years for me at all. It's crawled into it's own little world and boarded itself into it's little nook.

That said, I do love ska, but not this 'indie-ska' uprising we've been seeing in the last few years. Feels a bit like Fugazi covering Minor Threat and missing the whole point of the original style. I honestly can't remember the last ska album that came out that I would consider great.

RBF I feel has lost their way, but their next album will really tell me all I need to know. (and no, I'm not talking about the live album thing, the next REAL album that they keep putting off)

    • #22823

i think thats how i'm feeling about ska lately, none has really been as great as it use to be

like atm im not minding one night band. but that's about it

my music taste has shift to bands like the loved ones, against me, alkaline trio and gaslight anthem at the moment

reel big fish have been dissapointing me at the moment too. and im the same as you with this new album that will happen some time….

I'm thinking that I just won't get into ska as hard as I used to ever again, unless I were a part of the band. I wish I knew how to play trombone. That would rule, being a boner in a ska band.

Ska is still the main genre I'm interested in.

I'd still consider RBF my favorite band.

RBF are in my top 5 but they've lost the position of 1st many years ago. As for ska being my favorite genre; yes it is and will probably always be. I only listen to maybe 5 or 6 bands that aren't ska, and that's not very often.

    • #22857

I don't have a favorite band, just about 5 or 6 bands I'm fanatical about. The Fratellis, RBF, FIF, Yes, Cake and The Eels. So 6 bands. But yeah, I still love the band and I still get excited when I hear them on the radio or one of their songs comes on on Pandora or iTunes. I just don't beat them into my head like I used to. But with them switching up their setlists and playing music the fans want(or so it seems…), they might get some more play time from me.

Yeah, they need to make themselves known as more than a nostalgia act. You don't hear people screaming for Flagpole Sitta at a Harvey Danger show, or the Distance at a Cake show (and if you do, you probably see those people get their heads kicked in, and rightfully so) because the bands moved beyond it.

RBF can too, and they totally should. But if Aaron asks you guys what song you want to hear, pick something you never heard live before. Take advantage of it.

I guess what I'm saying is, request 'What Are Friends For?' or I'll get Andy to IP block you. :p

    • #22883

That's probably gonna be the idea for this tour…switch up the setlist, play some older, more rare songs and ask the crowd what they want to hear.

Although you might think that nobody in the band, or the people who work closely with them pay attention to what is said on here…it is brought to thier attention. Now, whatever they do with that information…well, that's entirely up to them.

I'm still in love with the Fish.
Not as much as I was some years ago, but I still love their songs. I've been a bit disappointed by some "commercial" moves (FFF and the new new DVD) and by the lack of energy of the OLAYBTYLA DVD – Quality or not, Tyler or not, I still prefer the old one.
But I'm still quoting jokes from the live album and no more than 3 days ago I was on a stage shouting "I want your girlfriend to be my girlfriend" in a mic and doing Scott's crazy-trumpet-playing faces. So yes, I guess I still love the Fish.

Anyway, my favourite band is still the Beatles. 🙂

I figured that. Aaron used to lurk the old board (evidence in that question thread a while back, they printed the page before the dinner winner even asked) and he even used to post occasionally. I do not doubt that the older songs they are reportedly playing now is a direct result of this board's activity.

Lack of energy on the live album? I thought it was just fine. Overdubs or not, it sounds great and is easily one of the best live albums I own.

Yes the live album is great, I listen to it more than any other Fish album, I was talking about the DVD. I just can't sit through it. After two songs, I put on the commentary.

Not sure yet. I probably won't decide 'til the day of but I usually get a hair up my ass and go. 🙂

    • #22949

they're one of a few hundred favorite….i haven't really listened to anything lately but listened the hell out of monkeys when it came out. didn't care for the cover album but i'll still give them a chance with original stuff. still not quite sure how rbf became a band so obsessed with covers. i mean they always did covers but not a whole album of them and not such bad choices in music. it's kinda like they tried too hard with being ironic with their choices….not to mention the duet album was enough new covers.

      less covers, more originals!!!

I'm glad this board's comments are being taken into account by the band and people around them (I'm guessing we have you to thank for that, Amy) but we're not exactly the be all and end all of fan feedback. And if we are, we shouldn't be – there's not even 10 regular posters (in terms of day-to-day posts).

On a different but thread related note: I think I'd have to say that RBF are my favourite nostalgia band (don't take that the wrong way guys). After thinking about it more I'd have to say that my favourite band of recent times has to be BTMI! – a band that I got introduced to by this (/the old) board fittingly enough. I listen to them (/him? It seems to be Jeff's brainchild) A LOT, I rarely go a day without listening to anything by them – it's just music that speaks to me a lot more, particularly in recent times. I dunno, it just clicks with me more.

    • #22973

Trever's still chasing girls on the playground. It's just frowned on these days. And you're going Amy, shut up. I've seen you at every RBF show I've been to since '06. You'll be there.

That's not true! I never go to the Hollywood or San Diego shows…and you're just saying that because you're contemplating on me potentially being sober driver from homoland to Orange County.

Amy, you better go! You still have my number right? If you're going, give me a call so I can meet up! Chris, are you getting a press pass to take pictures?

    • #23013

I don't think I have your number still. I have my kids full time now, since their dad was deployed to Bahrain. If I don't go, it's due to babysitting issues.

But I've never been to a Hollywood or San Diego show… Yet. Actually, I don't think I saw you at the Key Club show in Jan 07 at Morongo. Jeanie was there though. 🙂 And as far as shooting goes, I'd love to as always, I just have to see if I can get one. It's been a while since I talked to Vince last.

Makes sense. Babysitting issues (my sister's) are whay I haven't seen Harry Potter yet. We have to wait for her husband to get back from Colorado. !sad There's still a couple weeks left before the show. Hopefully you can work something out!
