MemberI Couldn't Do It
So I Asked For A Helping Hand
To Get Me Through It
But I Guess It Wasn't In Your Plan
Or Maybe You WereJust Too Busy To Make Time For Me
I Always Put You First
Expected Me To Figure Out Things
But They All Kept Getting Worse
When I Think About The Way You Let Me Down
I Wonder If I'm Supposed To Count On YouHow Could You Ignore Me?
My Imaginary Friend Didn't Come Through In The End
So Now I Have To Find A Real One
Didn't Answer When I Called
Well I Guess It's Just Because
He Was Never There At AllI Can't Believe It
Now That I'm Looking Back
Why Didn't I See It
Well I Guess I Didn't Even AskWhile You Were Never
Ever In The Places I Would Go
You Never Showed Yourself
All Those Heart-felt Conversations
Were With Me And No One Else
When I Called Your Name
You Never Answered Am I Insane?
If You Saw My SufferingHow Could You Ignore Me?

He Was Never There At AllIt's Not Hard To Let Him Go
I Don't Know Know Why I Ever Loved Him SoMaybe There Is Something Wrong With Me
I Don't See What They See
Used To Fold My Hands And Close My Eyes
And Think That You Were With Me

Rock it With IMemberHere is what I say about Religion:
Individual soul liberty
The basic concept of individual soul liberty is that, in matters of religion, each person has the liberty to choose what his/her conscience or soul dictates is right, and is responsible to no one but God for the decision that is made. A person may then choose to be a Baptist, a member of another Christian denomination, an adherent to another world religion, or to choose no religious belief system, and neither the church, nor the government, nor family or friends, or any of the general public, may either make the decision or compel the person to choose otherwise.
well, i mean, religion doesn't work unless you force it. the religions that are around today are so ingrained into society at this point that no one even questions it. but it was forced at one point until finally people just rolled with it.
it's still forced today. just no one cares and you get ostracized by society if you dare question it or say that you're whining because it doesn't effect them so they don't give a fuck.

Rock it With IMemberI agree, a lot!
But that's the beauty of Soul Liberty, it's not a "religion" just a common sense agreement really. And I feel the more that agree and believe that, the more tolerant people can be of each others differences.
But some Religions make it hard to practice Soul Liberty because they are so warped into "it's what I believe and NOTHING ELSE!!!" bullshit.

[/quote1206601965]to start off: i'm not especially shoving this down your throat. you have the option to remove yourself from this thread. so stop now if you don't just want to continue then stop now.
seriously, just stop. you have no reason to read further other than to perpetuate this conversation. you won't like what you read below, anyways so why inflict it upon yourself? it'd even work out in your favor because that'd mean all of what i wrote below was for nothing. come on, save yourself the trouble and just stop here.
down to brass tacks:
the burden of proof lies on those making the claim. so therefore, the model is religion needing to prove the existence of a supernatural being of any kind.not to mention, when you adhere to points that are wrong, it generally tends to make the whole theory fall apart very quickly. i mean that's all religion is: a theory that there might be a god (or multiple gods) and those stories might be true. there's very little proof other than the theory itself and mostly circumstantial evidence that would never hold up in any impartial court of law. but people are lazy and just chalk it up to god rather than trying to actually figure out the mechanics of what's going on.
oh…and here's something science does on a regular basis that religion never will do: admit its wrong. there have been huge shifts in science from what we think we knew to what we think we now know. religion will never change on any fronts. not the christian front (which the majority of the "supernatural" parts have been disproven already), not the jewish front (still no evidence yet of their exodus other than the story), not on the muslim fromt (do i even have to point out all the flaws in this particularly fascist and empirically wrong religion?). none of them will ever admit that key parts of their stories don't hold up to the burden of proof rather less the main claim which doesn't even have any evidence beyond those stories.
and while i may put my words up in public for people to read, this is by no means shoving it down anyone's throat. look up constantine. look up bush's faith based initiatives. look up the history of prohibition. look up who spearheads the anti-abortion runs and propaganda and bombs abortion clinics. look at who is killing each other over a fucking patch of desert and a wall. that's shoving it down someone's throat. i'm merely expressing my displeasure over something that will never change in my lifetime compared to what real action looks like in such realms.

SamuMemberYou cannot prove that there's a god, for the simple reason that there isn't any.
I mean, if you start with thinking "there may or may not be some kind of divinity, let's find out how it could work" you won't get anywhere. But if you start with thinking that there is no god, you simply don't feel any need to introduce one.

Jon, have you read Derren Brown's book? My guess is yes
[/quote1206650813]actually i don't have any atheist literature. i've listened to a few lectures/presentations from different people like dawkins and hitchens but little more than that.
i read a lot of history and the tie-ins with archeology, though. normally just through various news articles or information sites. i also try to look at both sides but the religious side is normally so outright wrong in their assertions and claims and trying to debunk science. it's very hard to give any credit to them other than that they know how to bullshit and trick simple people into believing what they say. i mean they'll just blatantly disregard studies and information or misrepresent information and not give a full picture. it's hard to even start to say "you know? maybe these guys are on to something" because they're wrong so frequently and refuse to admit when they're wrong or when they have misrepresented science's studies and findings.
and the lazy thing is just a simple observation that i've seen. people who don't want to think about the mechanics of something just call it god instead. there's almost no discernible difference at times from the greeks and romans who had gods for everything except it's all consolidated into one god with the judeo-muslim-christian religions.
and fuck people's "beliefs" when there is facts to say otherwise. it's not an opinion if you're wrong. a belief/opinion is "the new goldfinger still sucks as hard as the old goldfinger". that's an opinion. "children growing up in homosexual households grow up corrupt" or some variant thereof is simply wrong. likewise the claim "there is a god" means nothing. it's a statement of some kind of presence so therefore, it is trying to state a fact, not opinion. that's like saying "all black folk are all criminals" and that one has more evidence towards it too! but it's an incorrect statement based on faulty logic and a lack of the full picture. god existing doesn't even have as much evidence towards it as the racist statement!
same with scientologists and mormons too but i normally don't bother with those because they're so new that the old establishment within the religious market normally does a good enough job attacking and debunking them. too bad they're too afraid to turn such a mirror on themselves.

Maybe God exists, maybe he doesn't. I no longer believe he does, so I'm just going to live my life the way I believe I should (which, when you think about it, is pretty much the key point of religion). I'll get annoyed by people trying to teach me their beliefs, but I won't get angry. After all: If we believe what we're doing to be right, isn't it our duty to enlighten everyone?

I'd like to think that when I die, my ass will get burned to ashes, I'll get scattered under a tree somewhere, get picked up by a bee trying to pollinate a plant, turn into a peach or strawberry so I can bask in the sun and wait to get picked by a mexican and sold on a street corner for $5.00 a flat.

No, you're not allowed to believe what you want, get over it. Because apparently it somehow affects me negatively if you believe in something else.Sigh. The only thing I 100% believe in is that humans are way too dangerous and flawed to have a planet to themselves. But I do believe that Buddhists have it right, overall. Whether there is a God or not is irrelevant, because it will never be proved either way and there are far more important things to worry about then what someone else believes in. Just live your life, be good to others and be a nice person. Is that really so fucking hard?

[/quote1206684545]you know…faith has had many additional meanings added over the years. the root originally meant trust. what you're talking about is blind faith. the trust in something without proof. it's kinda like how opinion has changed from merely intangibles like taste into matters of politics and claiming ideology is an opinion when it faces strong opposition or to deflect opposition in the first place. similarly, using the term faith is a deflection from skepticism and criticism in the mainstream. if it's your faith or if it's your opinion or your belief, you can't be touched. but the bottom line of it is "is this something that cannot be measured but we have proof it exists". we can prove the process of taste exists and experience it every day. there is no proof of god beyond the religious systems themselves and their stories. so…we just skipped the first step of the scientific method: observation. first you have to observe something that indicates a deity. and there is no such observation…unless you really put your trust into people a few thousand years ago that they could know for sure that god was god and not just some guy playing messiah out in the streets. life of brian actually depicts a semi-accurate representation of the time period with many messiahs all vying for attention and disciples.
now…would any of those messiahs and their miracles stand up to the randi foundation million dollar challenge? i dunno. but the archeological and historical evidence points against it and the ever increasing lack of "miracles" as science can better explain the world around us points more and more assuredly to the negative. as i said before: people who didn't have the technology or were too lazy to investigate further just claimed god and called it a day. man created god, not the other way around.
and again, burden of proof goes back to those making the claim of the presence of a deity. faith is not proof, it's a placebo.

[/quote1206909312]The funny thing is, I completely agree with what you say on the whole 'man created God' thing what with that being a pretty good summary of what I've come to believe recently.
However you're still an asshole because you still take a derogatory tone towards believers.
This is where what Jeanie said comes in because, again, it's a pretty good summary of what I've come to believe recently.
Put simply: I think the whole God thing is a crock of shit BUT I could easily be wrong, I won't ever know, so I'm just gonna do what I think is right and see what happens when I die. But I won't ever try to make anyone feel stupid about believing in God or about believing what ever it is they believe.
I will tell people that they're stupid if they come out with a high and mighty "my belief is right and your belief is wrong" approach (what you're doing).
You sir, are stupid.
That is all.

It's not that hard to be tolerant or ignore assholes. It really, really isn't.
[/quote1206682882]Amen to that! Being a good, accepting person really takes no effort on your part. Just the urge to not have a conflict.
And I think I read all the posts completely, but I don't think anyone mentioned the word faith. Of course there is no proof that God exists, but true believers don't need proof. Faith is all they need to believe. It is impossible to explain that faith to non-believers, this is why an argument based on pure logic will never be resolved. I have a degree in Biology, I believe in the scientific process: observation, hypothesis, experimentation, data, conclusion. But I'm also a Lutheran. I certainly don't believe God is a puppet master; determining ball games, starting wars, having a say in gang violence, etc. But, ultimately, proof or no proof, I have faith that, in my last hour, I will know that there is something to look forward to. But, anyone who knows me also knows that I believe in making the most of your life while you're here, so cheers!
OK, I'm ready, rip me apart!

[/quote1206920586]how come christians can say they believe in god all they want but if i stand up for my beliefs and say there is no god all i want, i'm an asshole? fuck that, that's societal programming and religious followers playing the part of the victim when they've never been the victim in their entire fucking life.
way to buy into their game and give them more power, stupid.

and rationality being defined by someone with an imaginary friend is quite humorous. and i'm actually quite accepting. i'd still love to have a beer or whatever other activity with you and everyone else from the board. just: you're wrong.

I'm not telling you that you're wrong, I'm telling you to not tell everyone else that they are definitely wrong and that you are definitely right.

the most i'd ever concede is that there is the potential for there to have been or maybe still be a deity or multiple deities of some kind but it's not as described in any of the mainstream religions.
christianity, judaism, islam, taoism, greek, roman…they're all wrong and it has little to do with the idea of god but more that historically they're wrong and we've shown archeologically that there are many fallacies in their holy books and simply just fantastical stories that have no verification.
we do, however, have a lot of proof that messiahs were very popular around the time that jesus was supposed to exist. one stuck and stayed popular first through the enthusiastic message then through the sword and now just by social pressure and accepting something that isn't true as fact.
and yes, we don't know but that's no excuse to automatically assume god and, more so; just because we can't prove definitively yes or no about a supernatural being doesn't mean that all religions are bulletproof.
