I’m just finishing listening to the album now. About to go to bed, as it’s 5:40am, so I’ll just give a few comments. Also, Keith was pretty spot on for the most part.

Forgot to mention that I love the Message to You Rudy homage at the end of Don’t Stop Skanking

There is some good stuff on it, but it\’s really muddled and sloppily put together. 

I really do like Famous Last Words. I even like it better than when they did it six years ago (see Our Live Album track \”A Fond Adieu\”).

I also really like Don\’t Let Me Down Gently. 

And The Promise is probably the best written and constructed song on the album. Huh… what? He DIDN\’T? Oh… man…

Hiding in my Headphones has really grown on me in a short while, but it\’s two minutes too long.

Oh, and the crackly effect during \”A Message To You, Rudy\” is AWFUL.

I challenge someone to step up and say this isn\’t their worst album of original material.

You poor poor soul, smdh. I’m just curious what you mean by sloppily put together and muddled. I also would like to know if you have any music background of some sort. The crackling sound is PERFECT. Its a tribute to two-tone, you know… vintage stuff.

Everyone Else is an Asshole – My god, this is like Another FU Song, except funnier and better musically too. Seriously the funniest song they\’ve ever released. It\’s a really funny take on the whole \”bitter Aaron\” thing. This is a wonderful opening for the album, and if I didn\’t know anything about RBF I\’d be instantly tempted to keep listening after hearing it. Also, a fading outro? Since when does RBF do those? I can only think of All I Want Is More on TTRO off the top of my head. Anyway, 10/10

Punisher – We\’ve already heard a low-quality live version, and we already know what it sounds like, but…oh shit, sax solo. That\’s awesome. Another great, funny song. By this point I\’ve already decided that this might be my new favorite RBF album. 10/10

She\’s Not the End of the World – Oh, it\’s the \”nah nah, nah nah, doo doo doo-doo doo\” one from the preview. Jesus CHRIST this is fast. This is faster than anything they\’ve done in the past 10 years. I\’ve decided by now that I love Matt Appleton. He is definitely hitting some Scott-worthy notes. This is great. 9/10

Don\’t Let Me Down Gently – The first cover song. It\’s a hell of a lot better than anything on FF&F. Very catchy. The sax is really improving RBF\’s sound. Like. a lot. 8/10

I Know You Too Well – Old news, but it\’s a fantastic song. I actually learned this one on guitar a few days ago. 9.5/10; it would be a 10 but the fart joke is still off-putting to me even though the rest of it is absolutely fantastic.

Hiding In My Headphones – Not as good as the others. Still pretty cool. Gets stuck in your head. 6.5/10, would be higher if that high-pitched voice was…not high pitched. Like I said in another thread, it\’s the Song #3 of this album. There are plenty of other songs that could\’ve been chosen as the single, but oh well.

I Dare You To Break My Heart – Not really a ska song at all, more like 80s pop with some horns, but it\’s still a really good song. Upbeat and catchy. 9/10

Your Girlfriend Sucks – This is the song I was most excited for from the preview. Oh god, this is hilarious, and I\’m pretty sure everyone can relate to these lyrics. I am so incredibly happy that Aaron still knows how to write hilarious songs. 10/10

Don\’t Stop Skankin\’ – This reminds me so much of 241. Lots of minor chords, and even the way Aaron is saying \”Don\’t Stop Skankin\’ reminds me of the way they all said \”TWOOO FOOOUR OOONE\” in the original recording. Oh christ, a muted trumpet. I love it. Reminds me of the beginning of Walking Away by Streetlight just because of the mute…and all of a sudden, an entirely different song starts in the middle of this one? Okay, that was a little weird. Still love it. 10/10

Famous Last Words – Wait, hold the phone. That is the beginning to \”A Fond Adieu\”. You know, the thing they used to play before Sell Out at the end of shows. This ought to be interesting…oh, here\’s the depressing song. It\’s actually pretty much Slow Down with sad lyrics. I like it though! The whole thing is done with an acoustic guitar. Here we have a trombone solo. That\’s always a good thing. I\’ll give this one 8/10

Lost Cause – Totally picking the mood back up from the previous song. I love the way the verse leads up to the chorus (hard to explain). Very nice, not much else to say about it. 8.5/10

I Love/You Suck – Hahaha, \”I love you so much but I think you suck\”. Basically the same message of \”I Know You Too Well\”, but without the female vocals. Fast, punk-style chorus that goes straight into an awesome trumpet solo with Aaron\’s ska noises in the back. Then we have this awesome, inspirational buildup to the final chorus. This kind of reminds me of \”She\’s Famous Now\” for some reason…it sounds like it could\’ve been on WDTRSH. Another 10/10 here.

P.S. I Hate You – Another relationship song, surprise surprise. Also another really fast song that kind of slows down at the chorus, which is interesting. This is a song about finally leaving the girl who ruined your life, and it really reminds me of \”All I Want is More\”, in that it just pumps you up and makes you feel like a total fucking badass. 10/10.

The Promise – The last song from the preview is the last song on the actual album. No hidden track at the end (which doesn\’t bother me, because those are stupid with most people using mp3 players rather than actual CDs). This is the second cover on the album. It\’s slower, more relaxing. Has a nice sax solo. Kind of calms you down from the previous song, haha. I\’ll give it a 9/10 because it\’s actually really…I guess \”sweet\” would be a good word? Fuck, I don\’t know, I\’m still all hyped up from \”PS I Hate You\”. It\’s 2 in the morning and I feel like I could run a marathon.

Conclusion: This album is incredible. Amazing. 20/10. It has bits and pieces of what made every other RBF album great: the fast paced ska and humor of TTRO, the great guitar riffs from White Trash, the finely-tuned musicianship of Cheer Up, the depressing and yet oddly comforting lyrics of Why Not?, the happier, upbeat sound from Monkeys, and…the 80s covers from FF&F? I dunno.

Preorder this shit, THEN download the leak. Because I can tell you right now, this album is worth paying for. I cannot WAIT to hear them play some of these songs live. Everyone Else Is An Asshole would be a great show opener.

You cannot fathom how great this album is without checking it out for yourself. I love it; I just absolutely love it.

The Fish are not done. After hearing this I can honestly say that they aren\’t going anywhere for a long time. Aaron is going to be 70 years old, sitting in a wheelchair and singing about teenage relationships. And I\’m just fine with that as long as the songs he writes in the future are as good as these ones.

So yeah, check it out.

Aaron is far from being the best producer, it has mistakes,some parts of this album is … questionable if not completly terrible.

I think this is my fav sounding album guys… It’s all about the atmosphere and mood for me. It matches the album cover for me lol

Some thing I’ve noticed about the album…. I LOVEEEEEE the fading outros in some of the songs, something they’ve haven’t done very often. Also with the sax… I feel like it’s been with them forever. I am really excited what Matt brings to the band. Just think about RBF with Scott AND Matt! Woahhhh, sorry drunkkkk

This is an appropriate response.
I really wanted to love it, and there are a lot of songs that are good, but there are even more that could be good.
I’ve been saying it for years, everybody, especially Aaron Barrett, needs an outside opinion. He can’t produce his own work. If you disagree, remember this is the man that put Everybody’s Drunk and Please Don’t Tell her on Monkeys for Nothing in favour of Bang! The Mouse Explodes. He has displayed such creativity in songwriting that doesn’t just follow a formulaic ska punk song (see Bang!, Suckers, Trendy, Til I Hit The Ground, The Fire, Peter Bones, etc). Hiding In My Headphones displays this creativity (despite its massive structural problems), so I know he still has it.
The generic flavour of a quarter of the album aside, most songs suffer immensly by poor song structure. Too many verses, too many endings, and the song keeps going.
I don’t have a musical background, but I have an education that involves sound design and I’ve been listening to rock music long enough to know what works. The record crackle is a sound of its own, and the rest of the tracks come through crystal clear. I get what it’s trying to do, and I think that’s neat, but it’s a bad effect.
Like I’ve been saying for years, I’m not trying to spread hate for a band that I love. I’m expressing my desire to love the band even more because I know that Aaron Barrett is a much more capable songwriter and arranger than what he has displayed in the past five years.

Like The Wind, I too noticed the structure issues, but, truth be told, it didn’t bother me nearly as much as the use of fade outs. Songs with endings are wicked swell… if you write a song, write and record an ending. Fade outs are acceptable if you play disco… in which case, seppuku is also acceptable. 

That being said, I was rather surprised by how surprised I was by this album. Lots of little creative steps that I didn’t expect from RBF. It’s fun. Everyone probably knows that i’m not the type of music fan that frets when a band isn’t the same as they were 10 years ago. I’m also not the guy who keeps calling for the producer bit when it’s obvious that Aaron refuses to do business that way. While I hear the same things The Wind hears, I’m happier to celebrate what this album is than I am to frown about what it isn’t.

In my opinion, It’s the freshest sounding album they’ve made in ten years. To me, it’s the first time I’ve felt like an RBF album exists for a reason that isn’t “LOOK WHAT JIVE DIDN’T LET US DO! MAN, IT REALLY SUCKED WHAT JIVE DID TO US! YOU REMEMBER THAT? THOSE GUYS ARE MEAN! HEY REMEMBER WHEN JIVE DROPPED US?!”. Which was at least a little more interesting than “We’re Not Happy’s” “MAN WE REALLY HATE BEING ON JIVE” shtick.

It’s got all of the things I love about RBF and a few new things I dig. It’s a cool new album for the summer. That’s all it has to be. It’s not the RBF with a producer album that could be, but, at this point, anyone expecting that should get acquainted with the disappointment. It’s gonna be a while. sure. “hiding in my headphones” has two too many guests on it (just aaron and coolie would have made this track stronger, for me). There are things I don’t love about the production, but Nothing really worth bitching about. This album is much more a step in the right direction than it is in the wrong. I won’t call it their “best”, I won’t call it their “worst” (mostly because these are ridiculous words to try and use when talking about art). 

I like this album. Nice to see most of you feel the same. I’m glad to see it.

This album is Reel Big Fish trying too hard to be Reel Big Fish, which has essentially always been my problem with the Forces of Evil. Turn the Radio Off came out 16 years ago.

The best RBF album since TTRO.  So awesome, such great ska grooves, tight recording, great vocals, chicks cool, double vocals always rock, don’t let me down is awesome, every song is awesome.  I’m so fuckin happy.  I hope there are bonus tracks for the itunes version that we can’t get!!!! until then !

PS- Hiding in my HEADPHONES is amazing in the home theatre sound system- bass is finally pumped up RBF good job!

“Famous Last Words” could be about Aarrons experience in a band, with recording bullshit and politics of the industry..but could also be a metaphor for drug addiction and the constant roller coaster of that life, trying to get out but always being pulled back in.

I really, really like this album. Upbeat, catchy, and certainly worthy of the RBF name. Not sure where I’d rank it in with the rest of the albums, but it’s definitely on par with the majority of them. Like Sonic Libido, I prefer to cherish the album we got instead of wish for the album we don’t have. The whole band is very tight musically, and even though the production isn’t perfect, it still really works for me.

My favorite track is probably Punisher, with the very close runner-ups being P.S. I Hate You, Everyone Else is an Asshole, and I Dare You to Break My Heart.

Also, Don’t Stop Skankin’ is great and reminds me of a 1920’s jazz-type feel. I really hope I get to hear it live.

The last song on the album, “The Promise” is the best.  I like hearing the serious, sad and real side to Reel Big Fish.

They should do an entire album of only reggae songs, laid back, serious reggae songs.

You\’re right, I must be an idiot for not being overly critical of my favorite band.
I wasn’t referring to anyone here or anything specific, and I wasn’t being sarcastic. I’m just tired of seeing evaluations reduced to “this sucks” and “this is the best ever” on places like Facebook and YouTube. In all seriousness, it is very refreshing to see people articulate their opinions, whether they are negative or positive.

I love it, i can see why some people are bitching about the production and song structure and whatnot, but the way I see it is it’s new material for the first time in 5 odd years! 

It isn’t their ‘best album ever’, but in my opinion, it is one of the better. I am a sucker for reggae beats so just that alone has hooked me onto this album.

I think the vocals at times are bit sloppy, but I accept it as the ‘punk’ part of Reel Big Fish.

I think the thing that’s unfortunate about Reel Big Fish to me is the same thing with any band that’s been around for a while and has accumulated a huge roster of ex-members, and that’s the sense of longing you get for the ex-members. I think I’ve never felt it more than on this album. I can deal with Ryland’s drumming which I’m honestly not the biggest fan of because some of the shit he pulls out is ridiculous. This is Derek’s first original album with the band, and his bass lines are uninspired; they’re just there. That could be a thing with Aaron as the producer, but there are times during songs where I think “So much more could be done here.” 

An addendum: Every Reel Big Fish song can be made at least 100% better with a Dan Regan trombone solo.

Oh, and Lost Cause is still and by far the best song on this album.

I mean, a lot of the album has little snips of other (older) RBF songs, but that is just fine because they pull it off well and make it a new song that isnt just a rip off of themselves (like terrible bands like Nickelback do)

also, I fully agree with those who have said this already, I love the addition of the sax.

I’ve been listening to this album since the leak was posted, I’d finally like to review each song. Please let the noob speak.

Everyone Else Is An Asshole – A very nice upbeat song. Will sound great live and should be their opening song. Has some of the funniest lyrics Aaron has written. 9.5/10

Punisher – Another great song. The drum part sets this apart from the others. And holy shit sax solos. 9/10

She’s Not The End Of The World – My favorite song on the album. By a lot. Catchy, with awesome lyrics and horn parts. One of my favorite RBF songs they’ve ever made. 10/10

Don’t Let Me Down Gently – A nice cover, nothing too special, but still a solid track. 8/10

I Know You Too Well To Like You Anymore – I love hearing RBF duets with a girl singer. I’d like to hear more. The only thing I don’t like is the lame fart joke. Otherwise great song. 9/10

Hiding In My Headphones – Ugh…definitely the weakest track on the album. Why they chose this as the single baffles me. It would be so much better without the stupid high pitched voice. The horn breakdown is phenomenal though. And too many guests. 5/10

I Dare You To Break My Heart – Awesome. Great lyrics, sounds like it’s straight off of Cheer Up. I enjoy the five minutes. It’s something they don’t do very often. 9/10

Your Girlfriend Sucks – The one I couldn’t wait to hear in full from the preview. A relatable song. Love the horns. But I’d think we all do in every song on this album. They’re fantastic. 9/10

Don’t Stop Skankin’ – A nice instrumental, doesn’t really sound like a Reel Big Fish song until you hear Aaron yell due to the minor key. Muted trumpet? Yes please. I could live without the bit at the end though. 9.5/10

Famous Last Words – Yes. Yes. Yes. I love hearing the serious side of Aaron. Shows that he’s not just sarcastic, that there’s something there. I love that it’s based from the Sell Out intro as well. 10/10

Lost Cause – Not that big of a fan. I don’t really know why though. It’s not bad, but the other songs just blow it away in my opinion. 7.5/10

I Love/You Suck – Completely relatable. Been in this situation before so it sticks to me. 8/10

P.S. I Hate You – I wonder if they were making fun of the Beatles song here? Anyways, awesome fast paced song gets me pumped up. Reminds me of All I Want Is More or Nothin’ from TTRO. 9.5/10

The Promise – One of my favorite covers they’ve done ever. Love hearing the reggae side of the Fish. This song is a fantastic closer to the album, it’s calm and it’s almost like the album is laying you down to bed after the fast paced songs before it. 10/10

All in all, this album is great. The horns have never sounded better, and the lyrics are great as always. Fantastic work from the Fish as expected. One of my favorites that they’ve made. The only bad thing I can say is that there’s no “Make It Big” or “Spin The Globe”. Well, maybe next album…

My interpretation is that, Hiding in my Headphones is the ‘new single’ because it literally mocks the general public and their ability to soak up pop’y music. Might be a song that pop punk/ska kids will fall for and make RBF a name again

Also mocks hipsters who walk around with their headphones on, all emo and shit.

All while encouraging people to live life, ignoring stupid people and enjoying their life, with music.

Everyone Else Is An Asshole – I’m glad they kept the pace up on this one, it could have turned into another bland album song otherwise. The lyrics are simple yet so true. 9/10

Punisher – Has a Forces Of Evil feel, would have perfered a trumpet solo to add to the intensity instead of sax. But it still deserves 10/10

She’s Not The End Of The World – Not the best song in the world but the energy is amazing. Perfect to mosh to but the bridge kills it though. It would be great to hear live while shoving people around but the the bridge is going to make it awkward.  10/10 until the bridge then 7/10 but then it kicks in and back to 10/10

Don’t Let Me Down Gently – Fun, catchy, simple and straight the point. 9 /10

I Know You Too Well To Like You Anymore – I think I’ve already posted about this song, it’s a bit too long and the one joke isn’t the best but the rest is worth it. 8.5/10

Hiding In My Headphones – I like the point the are trying to make but it was poorly executed. Coolie Ranks was the only redeeming part.  4/10

I Dare You To Break My Heart – Good song writing. I like the double chorus. The arena rock solo is WAY TOO SHORT.  9.5/10

Don’t Stop Skankin’ – I’m a sucker for instrumentals, and they delivered. Although 241 will always be my favorite. 9.5/10

Famous Last Words – “Give us new music” says the fans but what we really want is rehashed versions of old songs made to sound new. Could have a darker sound to set the mood a bit, but that may just be my selfishness because I like darker sounds. 9.5/10

The Promise – I’m not fimiliar with the original song. There is an odd tempo change in the chorus that speeds up just a bit that kills the feel for me. Maybe it’s just a glitch. I’ll have to hear the cd version. Despite that, it’s a solid cover. 8/10

It may seem weird but the way I see this album is like this; It’s 2001 and Aaron wants to start a ska super group called the Forces of Evil and release and album with Reel Big Fish called Cheer Up that he thinks will “tank”. He comes to his senses and decides that is not a good idea and writes Candy Coated Fury instead. It’s like the opposite of a tear in the time-space continuum – he’s righted the wrongs yet we didn’t have to lose out on great music made by FOE [Which RBF should play a song or two live] so everbody can the best of both worlds. The Stephen Hawking of ska music.

Dammit, really? The vocal melody and harmonies were what I really liked. Still a good song, but I really wanted it to be one they wrote, just like how Cannibal and Party Down are really well written and dynamic songs. 

My first listen of CCF coming in 3… 2… 1… now.

Better said: I enjoy listening to most of the songs but no one of them really impressed me. You know, that moment when you just hit pause and say to yourself: “oh shit. I have to listen to this bit again.” – well it just didn’t happen. Not to say this is uninspired: it just doesn’t give me that kind of thrill I got from TTRO or WDTRSH – or even the best of Monkeys.
Anyway, I’m totally cool with it: you can tell the guys enjoyed doing this album so I’m happy. And I’ll probably end up listening to this as much as the FoE album (just a little less than the other RBF albums).

My problem doesn’t longer lie with the lack of creativity; while I still think that the band is way past “just” ska-rock (face it, they’ve been more of a rock band than a punk band for a long time), it’s good ska-rock, except…
I’m not sure I can get over the song structures. They don’t end at the right time, they have inappropriate bridges and refrains. Too many choruses, too many different parts of the songs.
I’ve seriously considered doing a “fan mix” and cutting out that fat to make a really good record.

I like the album for some of those reasons, but a fan mix would be awesome either way. You should do it!

Listening to this album while knowing that tonight I’ll be seeing my only long-term girlfriend to make our break-up official makes me see a lot of the songs under a totally different light. Maybe I should stop it…

Currently, I’m more in a “don’t let me down gently” mood. More precisely, I’m in a “I wish I could hate you” mood (ctually, I discovered Long time ago that my inspiration works best when I’m super pissed off, so I might make a couple of songs out of it).

I’m just now listening to the album for the first time. May sound weird coming from me, but I hate downloading music and hate finding it on YouTube. If I want to buy it eventually, anyway. … It feels like cheating otherwise, I guess. So, yeah, just now got the money to spend on it.

And it really worked: 6 songs about the girl and 3 more about others I’ve been hooking up with while trying to forget the first one. Plus a 5-song electro indie concept about that kind of feeling of void you feel (with recounted lyrics rather than sung).
I bet you can tell I was A BIT down for a while, but now I’m finally over it.

Something… mostly featuring myself only and mostly in Italian, not of publishable quality anyway.
There are a couple of things in English that I’m bringing on with the band, we’ll see how they turn out.

By the way: there’s a song I recorded like 4 years ago, at the time of my first break up with the same girl (it was one of THOSE stories) and it tells the same exact story that happened last year. I guess I should have learnt something from that, but apparently I didn’t. Here it is:

keep in mind that 1. It’s my voice and I’m not a singer 2. the instrumental basis is very rough. None of this was intended to ever circulate outside the band, but whatever, I feel like sharing.

Yeah it’s pretty rough, but a good melody, maybe a little long. I like it. It could definitely use some more horns, like behind the vocals in the verses.

Yeah, we’ve been talking of putting some more horns in it for the last 3 years… we had some lineup changes and stuff, so never got back to the “old” material. Now it’s the right time to do that, so hopefully we’ll put out a new (and better quality) version some time before the end of the year.

Annnnnnd… last month I really got into a girl, had a kind of romance for a while and broke up with her yesterday. Which means, four new songs and probably one new best friend.

Speaking of which, it totally made this Easter my best Easter ever.
/Went to a concert of a ska band who was big 10 years ago, felt like being 18 again, drove 3 hours to reach my friends’ country house at 4 AM, got completely drunk – and a bit high – sitting on the porch listening to traditional Indian music and waiting for the sun to rise. Best Easter ever.
