Ok, let's talk about him.

So what do you guys think of him? Hell even before he replaced Matt Wong. Jeffries Fan Club and Forces Of Evils.

Ok, He's not as half way good as Matt Wong. But Derek still is pretty good at bass. There's a reason why Aaron pick Derek, because he's pretty good, and a very decent replacement for Matt Wong.

But what pisses me off is that when ever RBF release something post Matt, there's always a low bass mix problem. I mean, listen to Live! In Concert!, yeah, can bearly even hear it. And some of the Best Of tracks have a very low bass mixing too. The only album that's did him good was FFF, but we all know how that went.

So yeah, what do you guys think of Derek?

Derek's improved so much…hopefully he'll have some good bass lines on the upcoming album.

Proably at first he suck. I mean, he's coming from a band that wasn't expecting high things. Jeffries Fan club are ok, but that was Derek old band.

Then FOE was like a "We'll make it Reel Big Fish style", and even that was good.

But when replaced Matt, he proably must had alot of responsibility to copy Matt style, sure he improved over the years, but just think how he was during the Monkeys Era. Proably still following the speed of Jeffries or Evils

He used to just play Matt's parts.

Now he plays Matt's parts with style. He really believes in what he's playing.

A joke about Derek being a bad bass player?

I was tempted to reply "Because it's not played by Aaron", but then I thought that the joke was too obvious.

Really, I think no one has anything against Derek. When a new guy comes around it always takes some time to blend with the others. Remember when Ryland got in?

Actually, I liked Justin's playing but the problem with him, apparently, was that he wasn't learning enough songs.

Honestly, I liked Justin's style better than Ryland because it reminded me more of Andrew's drum style. At least around that time…

Thing is, Ryland not trying to sound like Andrew's drum style. I know some hardcore Fish fan doesn't like this, but still, Both Andrew and Ryland are pretty bad ass drummers.

• #27337

Yeah. Dunno, my favorite is still either Andrew or Carlos. Ryland is good but there's just something different that doesn't sit right. Maybe it's that he's white*.

Honestly, the drumming on both Friend Or FOE? and We're Not Happy… are really good and thought out. Some of my favourite, actually. Justin just doesn't have a personality.

Yeah, but his drumming on some of the more ska-sounding songs is not as good as his beating the skins in the more rock oriented songs.

As far as I'm concerned, Carlos>Andrew>Rabbit>Justin.

No offense to the Rabbit, 'cause he really can beat those skins.

You're absolutely fucking crazy to rank Justin under Ryland. Ryland is very technically sound* but doesn't have much attitude in his playing.

*By that, I mean for all intents and purposes, he fucking shreds the kit.

Yeah, he's kind of like Travis Barker in that way. Really fucking good, but really boring most of the time. Carlos and Andrew just had a cool style and I think it played a big role in how the band sounded back then. Andrew was very active on the snare and Carlos was just very much a drummer version of Scott.

You mean Travis Barker these days? Because it's very far from boring in TOYPAJ, Box Car Racer, and their untitled album.

Travis is boring too. Great Drummer, but boring.

Really Justin is a great drummer. I wouldn't know how he did live because I can't find any live footage of him. Carlos is an amazig drummer too. If only he sticked around a little longer.

Andrew is a great drummer. He the orignal. You can't beat him.

We All love Ryland. But the thing is, these drummers were better then him.

I've never seen Justin, but he's amazing!

And you can't beat Andrew because he's the original? I guess you can't beat Tavis, either?

Too bad Carlos and Johnny totally did.

Travis isn't the orginal. Eric Vismantes is XD
But Nah, I wanna see or hear some stuff Justin did. We know we don't speak about Justin, and some may not think highly of him, but his drum work on We're Not happy is great.

We all know Carlos is awesome, and Johhny is the best trumpet player ever for the Fish. And Ryland is awesome too. But the thing is, It's alway which drummer or which Trumpet players were better. I sometimes think, if Andrew went back to Reel Big Fish back in the early 2000s, would he still be good?

Andrew would have been good, but Carlos was just an amazing drummer. I wish he had been in the band longer.

And Justin's stuff on We're Not Happy is pretty average, I think. I barely notice the drums when I listen to that album.

• #27354

Listen to the drums on The Set Up for both the rerecording and the original.

What

the

fuck?

/okay maybe it's just a matter of 2 tom kits vs 3 tom kits but come on, there's gotta be something better to do

Andrew's just a busier drummer. And wasn't Ryland originally a temp? That's what he seems to imply in the Making of Monkeys video.

Nevermind the fact that Reel Big Fish has been playing a different kind of music, and that's the kind of drumming that Ryland is used to. Though that never stopped Carlos from doing everything, and doing it well. But then again, he was Carlos.

Yeah, but Carlos would have been stupid to stick with RBF any longer than he did. Since leaving the band he's done some pretty big things and RBF have not… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_de_la_Garza

Also, what about Sell Out? Not saying he's not a good drummer, he's just not interesting. That's what all of the new RBF disappointment comes down to for me, it's just not interesting. The drums, guitar, i can't hear the bass, horns, vocals… there is just nothing on any of their recent releases that make me go "wow, that was a cool part, I want to hear it again!"

Even though I think the song ended up being a little cheesy and poorly produced, I think Party Down is musically a pretty interesting song, Cannibal is the other great new song on that album. But I personally find it sad and disappointing that the best song they've recorded in a long time is one of the first songs they ever wrote which is Till I Hit the Ground… Amazing song. They even said it themselves, they just don't have anything to prove to anyone anymore.
