MemberIt's Aaron's studio. He runs it with David Irish. I mean, its location is also listed as the band's headquarters, so I'm pretty sure it's just where Aaron records bands, including his own.
If I recall, it was still under construction when Monkeys was recorded.

[/quote1279847758]Haha, RBF's base of operations AND their recording studio is Aaron's house!?
What a douche.

MemberThat is a perfect studio for them to record demos for their albums before they go into a professional studio… Not acceptable for publicly released albums like this. I haven't even listened to all the songs all the way through yet and I'm already bored with this album. I just expect more from them after all the great albums they've released.

MemberI think it's a fine studio for the production style Aaron chooses to go with, as long as he doesn't overproduce the songs until they're boring. If he doesn't watch out (and songs like Sell Out and Beer are an example of this), he could turn out possessing one of the qualities he hated about Val Garay: Needing to have every single part perfect.
But most of the other songs on Best Of don't reek of that. I just think it's so fucking funny that they record out of his house. Sometimes it's like Reel Big Fish went on one too many tours with Streetlight. "Oh, you record from your basement? That's so cool! You want your albums to sound absolutely perfect!? That's an amazing idea! You're the dictator of the band but hide it by making jokes? I've been doing that for years!" Nevermind the fact that the two bands are very different.
Aaron and Scott should co-produce the albums, have I said that in this thread yet?

The WindMemberScott is barely a member of the band anymore. He was around for three days during the recording of Monkeys, just for the horn parts. He recorded his vocals in New York.

[/quote1279907101]Really? I thought he recorded his Monkeys vocals in the studio…
He seriously can't even fly out there to record the albums anymore? That's pretty depressing. Dude's gotta live his life, I guess.

[/quote1279909846]Umm, what exactly sounds "perfect" on this album? Have you heard the singing on Suckers? I'm pretty sure that if he needed every part to be perfect he wouldn't have left the first vocal line in suckers the way it is.

[/quote1279910899]Sell Out just reeks of polished recording, especially the way he changed the guitar work.
I don't think he realizes that his singing is getting consistently worse, though…

[/quote1281331604]That's not because of how or where it was recorded. I think this is where it gets tricky with mastering, and the mastering is done somewhere else.

I've met the fellow and though he was a friendly guy. However, he has a reputation. Has for years. I've figured it out from between-the-lines quotes of other band members, quotes from Aaron himself, his general mode of operating and second hand experience over the internet with acquaintances of his.

SamuMemberAaron is a figure of hate as long as he doesn't deliver some good new songs…
But seriously, I think the whole "Aaron is a douche" thing is half serious and half joke. Some of us, including me, think he is a little too controlling, acting as the leader, songwriter and sort-of-manager of the band. The other guys seem not to get much space, which is a pity because they have talent. On the other hand, Aaron seems to be the one who cares most for the band. He gets the band going, and that's not a little thing; I'm not sure if anyone else would put the same effort into it in his place.
The whole situation reminds me a lot of the latest Beatles years, with Paul struggling to keep the band focused and into new things, but at the same time taking over and pissing the other guys off. The big difference is that RBF is, and has been from the beginning, more Aaron's than anyone else's.

[/quote1281625308]There's no excuse for making a personal attack on someone ( someone you don't personally know) because you're not happy with the band's album. It's bad form, immature and it speaks loudly of the kind of person that would do it.

Doesn't change the fact that Aaron is successful, talented, and hard-working. I just happen to think that he's also a douchebag.

MemberI don't know Aaron personally, and neither do many of the people here. But let's say he is controlling and self-centered, as some fans think based on his music and public statements. If Aaron weren't controlling, what would that do to the band? His personal drive and desire to express himself are probably the most important factors in giving Reel Big Fish its identity. Whatever Aaron's personality may be is inseparable from whatever we like about the band.

Well, sometimes I don't like it, because there are negative things that come out of it. But yes, bands with definitive "leaders" tend to do better.
