You might of noticed (unlikely) that the site has been offline for a while. The ancient server I had ReelBigFish.info running on decided it was time to pack up bags and never return. I’ve managed to recover most of the content although the last 100+ days or so have been lost.

I’m going to play around with cleaning up the site a little over the coming weeks hopefully although we’re not as lively as we used to be!

The new Reel Big Fish are playing in Toronto next Friday, on their “Album that virtually no one in the band recorded on” tour.
It’s been a few years since I’ve seen them – Dan was still around – are they even worth seeing anymore? There are a few choice TTRO songs I’d love to see, but honestly… I don’t know if it’s just seeing a bastardization again. That’s sort of what they felt like in 2014. Has new life been breathed into them?

Saw them last January for the TTRO tour.Besides their cover of The impression That I get I can’t recall anything I hadn’t seen before from them. just your typical RBF show.
Which was a bummer since it was their first real show up here since 2013.Energywise (that’s not a word?) I even appreciated Anti Flag better

I suspected as much. I ended up not going.

I understand people not being excited to see non-original members playing RBF’s catalog of songs, but if RBF kept releasing new albums it would be the actual members playing. It’s been 5 years since the last album, the most years without a full album. Johnny’s instagram shows them recording hornlines, new music would make the concerts more exciting again.

But I hope the photos of them recording aren’t just for the new Goldfinger album. Considering that Matt and Billy performed with Goldfinger with Travis Barker on drums a few days ago. It looks like Goldfinger still puts on a great show.

A new album would be great! I really liked Ed’s drumming on the last Suburban Legends album. I hope he bring the same feel to RBF’s new music.

Branding is important. I’d have been way more stoked for CCF if it were a Forces of Evil album – I could forgive the glaring issues on it. Plus, it sounds way more like FOE than RBF.
Now, if a new RBF album has a proper producer on it (or at least someone in addition to AB), I’d get pumped.

To me, songwriting is more important than (technical) production. Artists need someone external to guide them and most importantly tell them when to stop.
Sounds were pretty good on Candy, but songwriting on some songs was a bit sloppy. Still a step forward wrt to Please don’t tell her I have a girlfriend. That one song has has the power to ruin the whole Monkeys album for me. I agree Candy sounds a lot like FOE, with all that “fuck this, fuck that” attitude.
So yes, RBF need a producer, but one with enough taste to help Aaron develop good ideas and enough authority to force him to drop bad ones.

Yeah that’s what I meant when I said “producer.” Not an engineer or whatever, but someone who produces the album. Basically, CCF comes down to the fact that no one was around to tell Aaron that nearly all the songs were two minutes two long… that second bridge isn’t needed, you don’t need to do the chorus again, this song doesn’t need three guest vocalists just use Coolie and be done with it etc etc

They’ve never had a better producer than Val Garay. Those songs on Cheer Up! are tight as hell.
