Anyway, I think it's a combination of the two. I think he sticks with the hair/sideburns because he likes it, but also because it's "safe".

He loves his hair. I think the most drastic change was when he did the fauxhawk ala Feldy to try and hide his thinning hair. I think he took care of the thinning issue.

Vague Love Song was about his hair and dealing with losing his hair around that time.

He's showing his age now isn't he? I can't remember where it was but in a recent picture I saw of him he looked pretty grey.
