I was looking through the Best of Us booklet today and I noticed Grant Barry's name under the 'RBF would also like to thank' heading. It's odd because he's the only ex-band member listed. Why would they give thanks to him and no other ex member (Matt Wong isn't even there)? And its hardly like he left the band on good terms.

Is there any significance to this or does it coincidentally happen to be a different Grant Barry coincidentally also affiliated with RBF?

He's done various work for Milano Music since then and probably helped around the office somehow.

Well it has been ten years, and though their split was probably less than amicable, Grant was certainly no Tavis.

Grant Was Aaron Friend. Even if they didn't Give Thanks To Matt Wong and Andrew Gonzales, I think they understand they're already thankful for them. IDK Why RBF Would thank Grant, But I guess It's maybe just being good friends.

And Plus, Grant Was One Hell of a Trombone Player 🙂

Dan>Grant, even back when they were both in RBF. If Dan had been the one to punch a security guard, they probably would have replaced him.

It Is True That Dan Is Better Then Grant, But it still doesn't Make up the fact that he's Still a Pretty Good at Blowing.

Just listen to him in The Scholars. He's Pretty Good.

Time passes and people forgive and forget. I'm sure Grant is still in touch and friends with Aaron.

That brings back memories about rumors concerning Grant being gay.

[/quote1280253585]Don't forget Aaron Barrett on trombone too in The Scholars, impressive also.

Hmm… if Grant is still on good terms with Aaron and RBF then why not bring him back? (granting he's kicked the boozing habit) It's odd how he's never been replaced, and I've always thought RBF could do with a second trombonist again. Listening to the live and re-recorded versions of TTRO and White Trash songs compared to the original versions (which featured 2 trombones), you can tell a big difference in the horn parts (for the worst IMO, much flatter).

I think it's pretty clear we don't need him back.

Sure, RBF Would be alot better with the 2nd Trombones and Horns, but what in the past was in the past. RBF is still kicking without him.

And Plus, Grant would kind of be busy with his own life?

When I saw RBF, they actually had Mike Soprano from Streetlight play backup trombone on She Has a Girlfriend Now. It wasn't really that different sounding. I think it would be kinda cool if RBF re-aquired a sax player after all this time, but I love the brass sound.

    • #26681

I was so fucking let down. I was hoping that with Tyler in the band and with MMB breaking up that Chris Rhodes would be reuniting with Tyler and joining RBF on second trombone.

The band sounds better with the full two trombones, two trumpets.

Anyways…yeah…Grant work(ed/s?) for Vince's company and so he's still very much with and around the band.

But seriously…check out how awesome it was with Tyler Jones and Chris Rhodes.

I'd have Little Johnny Christmas over him any day of the week. A million times more amusing and entertaining on stage than Jones, and a better trumpet player to boot. Plus Tyler had the same problem as Grant didn't he? Getting drunk and dancing on stage rather than playing. Let him continue doing whatever he's doing now.

A second trombone player would be great though. I think that's how Aaron intended his bands to be, hence FoE having the two trumpet two trombone set-up. What are Chris Collonier and John Throop up to nowadays?

Tyler was probably the worst Reel Big Fish trumpet player. Chris Rhodes is great, and to have him in a band with Dan full-time would be amazing. But now the Bosstones are back together and yadda yadda yadda. Dan can hold his own. He don't need nobody to be his wingman.

Bullshit he was the worst. He was one of the best. The problem is that he took up too much attention and Aaron can't have that.

I think they might be thinking John is better because he can hit higher notes, which it sounds like he can, but that doesn't make him better or more creative, it just means that they have Uncle Joey from Full House playing trumpet for them now.

I think the real problem is that everyone in RBF is white.

They do need a four piece horn section, it really makes a difference when there aren't two trombones. The four piece horn section is really what helped make RBF RBF…

I do understand why they don't have four horns though… It's one less person to pay and it's one less person to take up space on the bus. This is probably the most enjoyable and easy to get along with band lineup they have ever had and that's important, but it's just kind of boring.

I was never impressed with tyler. he fucked up a lot! A LOT! and he wasn't funny. Why was he "one of the best"?

I totally agree, he was always flubbing notes at every show I saw him play and it sounded like crap, but maybe he was good at writing parts? I dunno… I've always wondered who wrote and arranged most of the horn lines.

No. Tavis could hit high notes too (sometimes), but John is a better trumpeter tonally and with the overall technique. I mean, Scott's good, but there's a difference in tone in his solos from John's. John just knows his way around the instrument better than anyone else who's ever played for Reel Big Fish. If you think Tyler's better than John, you're simply in denial (or don't really understand trumpets/brass instrumentalism).

I don't know who writes the horn lines. Maybe Aaron gets a general idea for the melody and then the horn section adds/tweaks stuff? Maybe they write it together? I dunno…it would be easier if every writer for the song was listed, ala Turn the Radio Off, so we could guess who wrote what part.

Tyler Was pretty lame. I Really hated him when TSMGO.

Tavis is a Good trumpet Player, But he was just a dick, remember?

The same Grant Barry, and he was thanked because he did help. I'm sure if Matt helped, he'd be thanked too.

Don't care that Tyler missed notes. He was a showman and made the shows more fun and crazy. Well-behaved band members are good for a nice, predictable boring show. It's not like as if RBF is really a forum to show off one's musicianship.

    • #26721

That's your interpretation. Some agree and some don't. It's sad to see so many critical and bitter people on this board.

I'd much prefer a well-behaved good musician to a fun shitty one.

Dan is a fun, good musician. John's fun, but I'm not going to knock him for wanting to focus on playing. Did anyone knock Matt Wong for just standing still and playing the whole time? No, because he was flawless.

Matt Wong Just stand still in the Back, Not really making him visable to the crowd that much. While Derek kind of showing more action then matt on stage

That's debatable. Derek smiles and moves around more, sure, but Matt was more interactive as far as the banter stuff goes.

RBF works as a balance. When Scott wasn't playing trumpet, all you could hear would be Dan's trombone in the horn section at times. They did weaken a few songs when I saw them when Tyler was there.

My only experience of Tyler is the TSMGO dvd. It was fun (I prefer it to the OLAIBTYLA dvd) but him missing notes on stage was kinda annoying. It's a pity because in the "behind the curtains" bits he does some very nice things and also shows a good taste for solos, which was partly spoiled in the concert – his solo in Join the club is very good at first, then gets lost and off-tone.

Over all I prefer John, but I wouldn't talk shit on Tyler.

Tyler obviously had potential, but due to the fact that he was frequently drunk, and consequently a subpar performer (and only played on two Cheer Up! songs and maybe a few others between Cheer Up! and his firing), we'll never know how great he really could have been.

He was funny, though. A great character to have in the band alongside Aaron, Scott, and Dan.
