The WindMemberI've decided to record an album and start a bit of a multimedia band with traces of fiction. I still need to work out the kinks of recording and what else this project will entail. My buddy will produce it (some may remember SushiDestroyer) and I will play the part of the band. Two of the members anyway, but I'm not sure if I want to add more. I hope to perform a few times at least, but I don't know under what circumstances.
I've started a myspace and put two of the song demos that I've recorded over the past two years: [link=http://www.myspace.com/theradiooctopus]http://www.myspace.com/theradiooctopus[/link]I'd appreciate applause and criticism.

MemberI… I have no idea what the lyrics are in Start Here.
The Rain's pretty good though, I like it. -

MemberMan, that's similar to something I wanted to do for years. Oh well, not like that'll ever happen anyway.
Also like Adam said, I can barely hear the vox on Start Here. If it had drums and bass it would be better, though I do like the percussion sounds.
The "mixing" on The Rain kind of really bothers me, because the song feels like it's better than it sounds.
I do like it. Though it does sound somewhat like if Pavement and RBF had a nephew with an abusive father.

The WindMemberTruth is, there aren't really lyrics for the second verse of start here. That's just mumbled bullshit. I'm not entirely sure the falsetto works. It seemed like a good idea when I first wrote it, but after hearing myself sing it… I've reconsidered.
These were mixed in Garage Band, JD. Poorly, by myself, I might add. I appreciate the crit. I do have more, but those two are the most complete. -

The WindMemberI just looked up Pavement on youtube.
I recognize Cut Your Hair, and I'm digging the rest. It's tough to look at myself objectively, so I really do appreciate honesty. Don't sugar coat it.

MemberWell, I've listened to a lot of music of a lot of genres, so I think I can gather when something just doesn't work. I think. Not like I'm any kind of expert, just a fan of rock n roll.
The opening of Start Here reminds me of Jenny V. by the Green Pajamas in that it instantly catches your attention. But the transition from the intro into the song seems disconnected. The falsetto works, actually. It adds a little something to it. Since it's rough though, I'm sure you can tell things like the weird guitar bit after the first chorus and whatever else is in there that I haven't noticed.
The Rain starts off strong again, and catches your attention right away. But like I said, the problem with the mixing is that it sound like everything is trying to compete for attention at once. Both guitars, and bass are all really loud and going off on tangents at the same time. It needs to be like how the Strokes single off both guitars and bass to their own area of the mix.
As for the songs themselves, well they all have defined areas and parts to them, so there's nothing really to critique since at that point I would just be nitpicking the songwriting, and I don't like to nitpick songwriting unless there's something very blatantly off and wrong sounding about it. I'd say just be careful about putting too much in a song at once. It has the opposite problem of something being generic and the listener getting bored, where there's too much going on in order for the listener to concentrate. I think that's probably why mixing is so important to the process. Since it can make a good album unlistenable (Like Chris Murray's "Raw") or a mediocre album sound good (just listen to almost anything Tom Lord Alge does), and it really makes the difference.
So, uh, yeah. Good stuff.
When did you write those, anyway?

The WindMemberI wrote The Rain about four years ago, recorded it two years ago.
I wrote the horn line in start here in high school, and the rest of the song a year and a half ago. I recorded it in December.I'm getting someone who actually knows what he's doing to record and mix. Overall produce, actually.
Thanks man. -
