So I'd figure I'd throw this out there, since I honestly can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

Are there any newer ska bands that don't have political commentary stuffed up their ass, don't sound generic like Flip The Switch, don't sound like an emo band using ska as a crutch to sound unique, and aren't ska core?

I realize this is like asking to find a pop punk band these days not obsessed with Max Bemis or Anti-Flag level lyrical idiocy, but I'd figure I'd give it a shot.

Listening to Static World View and I got a bit depressed thinking about how I haven't found a new ska band that I've liked in probably half a decade or more.

Haven't you heard? Ska is dead.

It's been dead since 1982.

Every ska band I've discovered in the last 5 years or so that I liked came out around pre-2003. Everything now sounds like what I listed above.

Spring Heeled Jack are reuniting for one night – May 7th in New Haven at Toad's Place. The good bands of the mid to late 90's all seem to be reuniting, major and independent, they must realize music has been terrible lately. JD is right about even ska being in such a bad slump lately. I haven't been interested in buying a ska cd post 2005. Let alone finding a new ska band since then.

The only ska band I'm interested in new material is Starpool. i know they aren't "new" but it's the only thing that's still interesting. They put up a new song called Falling Down, it's almost a throw back to the fun/ny ska of pre-3rd wave. Plus their shows look like a fun atmosphere, something most new ska bands are trying to get away from because of the political core. Or they're just generic and can't create a fun crowd.

Check out the Starpool song – it starts at 1:55 but the stuff before is fun to watch.

Yeah, like THAT. I mean, I'm not asking for a lot. Just some good songwriting that doesn't have to blow smoke up it's own ass.

Starpool aren't new or anything, but they might as well be in this climate.

When I mention bands like Billy The Spikes, Potshot, and Snail Ramp it's not because I think Japan is better at ska or anything, but they seem to know better than the UK or US when it comes to understanding the fun side of the music nowadays. While the UK and US are too caught up in trying to be 'relevant' or some shit.

If this is the fourth wave, it can go back to the sewer that spawned it. Ick.

I'm not even saying it has to be wacky or super serious. There's a balance. Like this:

There's the Ontario "ska" scene, but half of the bands aren't what you're looking for: illScarlett, Bedouin Soundclash

You already know the Johnstones. They are what they are.

BUT! If you don't already know the Flatliners, look them up. I'd link you to a good song, but my internet is stolen, weak and limited. I'll get you some good at the Library tomorrow. All their songs I've heard haven't been disappointing.

im enjoying the amount of folk influenced punk coming out

bedouin soundclash are amazing but arent ska

try a band called one night band, they r from montreal and have an awesome feel to them. they toured here last october and they were amazing

flatliners are more like reggae influenced punk. their first album is very ska punk. but yeh their second album is far more superior. they are coming here in march with no fun at all. im pretty excited. they are doing a sideshow at a night club i use to go to, so im gunna hit them up there

This is a good Flatliners song:

Bedouin are what JD is talking about… bands using ska as a crutch to sound unique. Bedouin and illScarlett.

Doesn't mean they aren't good.

Big and the Kids Table are kind of new. They venture away from ska a bit though.

Yeah, I know about Big D. They're not really that new to me.

Flatliners, I have their first album that I found at HMV for like $6, it was okay. They kind of bore me though. I prefer bands like Assorted Jelly Beans or Kicked In The Head for that kind of stuff.

Is this the band you were talking about, Ant?

They're not bad. I like the minimalistic approach. It's weird how I don't really hear about Montreal ska bands much around here.

I look forward to seeing your approach, Rikk.

• #25063

yeh that's them. they are fun

and with flatliners dude, give their second album a listen. it shits all over their first. it's not ska punk like the first though

if you want, look up a couple australian bands like chris duke and the royals (young and simple, but fun) and the resignators

there is also a 2 tone band called backy skank from here. they are about to release their second album.

i cant think of much else though so i have gotten into fuck all ska bands lately since it's mostly shit

Someone from this band spammed the old board a while back and I really like what I've heard of their stuff.

If anybody can ever figure out to obtain one of their albums, please let me know.

fandangle are so fucking generic and boring

Fandangle aren't great.

My first UK scene reccomendations:

The JB Conspiracy – http://www.myspace.com/thejbconspiracy
The Skints – http://www.myspace.com/theskintsuk

JB are a fantastic ska/punk with loads of energy. They only have one album (This Machine) and it's a proper classic for me. 2nd album is coming this year.
The Skints are more of an ecletic mix of punk and reggae and some lovely vocals. The album 'Live. Breathe. Build. Believe.' is possibly my favourite release of last year and I can't recommend them enough.

EDIT: If you can't find their albums anywhere online, give me a PM and I'll try and sort you out.

Tocando Fondo is what I'm fucking talking about. That's some pretty good stuff.

Fandangle sounds like those LTJ clones with pretty generic lyrics.

JB is okay, but aren't really what I'm looking for. They seem to follow the Howard's Alias/Streetlight style that I really don't want to get into anymore.

The Skints sound good from the clips I heard, but it sounds a hell of a lot like another band I can't think of right now.

I'm glad I made this thread. So far most bands have been really different sounding.
