      So this quite clearly white guy being played by a white guy is a problem…

      But nobody mentions the abomination that piccolo is now apparently the lesbian Dame Judi Dench with 6 months in the gym behind her:

      I don't think so, I've always assumed the Dragonball characters were Asian, based on the culture, clothing, and everyone who doesn't have blue hair having black hair.

      I'm sure you're right, he probably is supposed to be Asian – the same point can be made in reference to most animes out there; Lord knows I've spent a lot of my time spent watching various shows trying to figure out what ethnicity various characters are supposed to be (Aizen from Bleach or Luffy from One Piece for instance).
      My point is that Piccolo is at least as much of an insult to the original character design as a weedy white American kid playing Goku.

      I don't really know why I'm bothering with this thread, I don't even watch Dragonball.

      this movie looks as though it doesn't follow the story what soever…. it looks as though they've completely ditched the alien thing which is the foundation of the series

      Saw it.
      Piccolo was lame and the plot revolved around him, so the plot was pretty bad.

      Aside from that… I'd have to say it did good fan service. Ethnicities aside, the characters were pretty on. Master Roshi was a perv who copped a feel on Bulma several times. Yamcha was characterized pretty well (though his character did jack all). It was a good translation to a movie, the makers didn't ignore the show completely. Even Roshi's place, while found in the middle of a city, was sort of island-like. I was surprisingly impressed.

      The plot was Piccolo tries to get all the Dragonballs because he wants to destroy the world. There is no mention of Kami and he doesn't give birth to the DBZ Piccolo. I don't know much about the original Dragonball, but if something like that did happen, this movie was the bare-bones of it.

      The original Dragonball show had a plot like that about 3/4 in.

      Honestly, I prefer the original show over Z, but that's me.

      it's based off of the original dragonball. too bad there's no krillin. it's actually surprisingly good and translates the original characters and plotlines well.

      goku isn't native to the land where the story takes place, though.
