MAX!Member
Hey guys, given how much I love ska music I’ve always kind of wanted to know how to actually play a brass instrument. Unfortunately I don’t have a whole lot of spare time to learn, or too much money to spend, but from what I’ve heard trumpet is typically a little easier to learn that sax or trombone.
I guess I was wondering if any of you had any advice, like what cheap trumpet may actually sound a little decent and the best way to teach myself (youtube videos, books, just fucking around, etc…). I haven’t played a musical instrument at all in a long ass time, but I’d really love to be able to play some brass instrument at least a little so any advice you guys can give me is much appreciated.

MemberWell, sax isn’t a brass instrument, so the concept of playing it is different from trumpet or trombone. In my opinion, trumpet is much easier to learn than slide trombone, plus it gives you access to other valved instruments like tuba, baritone horn, euphonium, flugal horn, etc.
Try looking for a King or a Yamaha. If you’re near a Sam Ash, they often have used instruments for cheap. I would also buy a beginner’s book with scales and songs. Learning trumpet is a process, but it’s fun. -

SamuMemberJust don’t get discouraged if you’re not able to get a single sound out of that stupid metal tube for the first few times you try.
Learning a brass instrument is a lot more physical than e.g. keyboard or guitar. You will have to learn how to move your facial muscles the right way and to breathe the right way. Playing continuously for more than 30 minutes can be really hard at the beginning.I agree on the Yamaha brand (I don’t know King). When I started 15 years ago Jupiter was a decent sounding beginner trumpet, but I don’t even know if the brand exists anymore. Look for a used instrument with not too many bumps. -
